 ஒரு அரசனக்கு மற்றவருடைய தோழமை மிகவும் தேவை.  அனால், அந்த நட்பானது மிகவும் நுட்பமாக தேர்வு செய்யபட்டு இருக்க வேண்டும்.  ஒரு அரசன் தன்னை சூழ்ந்திருபவர்களின் தன்மையை அறிந்திருப்பது பற்றி குறள் நிறைய கூறுகிறது. இந்த அதிகாரம் தவறானவர்களின் நட்பின் விளைவுகளை கூறுகிறது.

உலைக்களத்தில் பட்டடை என்பது உலோகத்தை உரு செய்ய உபயோகிக்கும் அடைகல் (Anvil).  கருமார் ஆலையில் பார்த்தால் அடைகல் இரும்பை தாங்கி இருப்பது போல் இருக்கும்.  அனால் அதன் வேலை தாங்கி இருப்பதன்று, இரும்பை உடைக்கவே பயன்படும்.  அதே தன்மையுடையது ஒரு பகைவனின் நட்பு. உள்ளதே அன்பில்லாமல் புறத்தே அன்போடு நண்பர் போல் நடித்து, சரியான சந்தர்பம் வந்ததும் தாக்குவார்கள்.  இவரிடம் ஜாக்கிரதையாக இருக்க வேண்டும்.

பகைவனாக இருந்தவன் எவ்வளவு நட்பாக பழகினாலும், அந்த நட்பை சந்தேகக் கண்ணோடே பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்று வள்ளுவர் சொல்வது சரியே.  ஆனாலும், அக்பர் தான் போரில் வென்ற ராஜபுத்ரர்களை பின்னால் நண்பர்களாக ஆக்கிக் கொண்டதை நாம் பார்த்திருக்கிறோம்.  அது எப்படி?

Alliances are the life blood any kingdom.  So are advisers to the king.  The Thirukkural goes into great depth on the various alliances and friendships that are and are not suitable for a king.  In this chapter, kooda natpu, he talks about inappropriate friendships.  Given the rest of the kurals, I personally believe Valluvar is talking about friendships with ex-enemies in this chapter.

The analogy that is used in this kural is quite interesting.  In a smithy, an anvil looks like it is supporting the sheet or bar of metal.  However, the actual use for an anvil is to provide the leverage to break that bar of metal when the blacksmith smites it.  Valluvar says that an enemy’s friendship is similar.  While it looks like he is a friend externally, internally his heart is filled with rancor and he is just looking for the right opportunity to strike.

While the advice given in the kural is sound, we have a historical counter point in Akbar’s approach of successfully befriending the Rajputs that he defeated in battle.  It would bear analysis on how Akbar was successful in this.
