510: When Does Selection Stop? –

Selecting an unqualified person and not fully trusting a qualified person who has been properly selected – both of these behaviours in a leader will lead to everlasting trouble” says this kural, identifying when the selection process should end.

In this chapter, therinthuthelithal, Valluvar outlines in some detail how to go about selecting people for an assignment.

The other couplets in this chapter talk about what are the considerations in selecting a person, what are the pitfalls, what to look for, what to discount and such like dimensions in the selection of a person.  This kural, the last, talks about the necessity for fully empowering the selected candidate, once he or she has cleared the intensive selection process.  (As an aside, I personally believe that the reversal of this attitude – selecting indiscriminately and weeding out people on ‘performance’ – is the root cause for most of the ills plaguing the Indian IT industry.  I also believe we are yet to see the worst effects of such a strategy.)

When the leader does not trust the person who is selected after vigorous qualification tests, it sets up a negative spiral. Since the candidate is, in a sense, gelded by the lack of trust, his output naturally suffers.  This reduced output reinforces the leader’s original mistrust leading to a vicious cycle.  This is what Valluvar refers to as “everlasting trouble”.

A few years ago, there was a very interesting experiment conducted by Rosenthal-Jacobson in US schools. They claimed to have refined a 15 item questionnaire that can predict the best performers in a class.  They were allowed to administer this questionnaire and they identified the students “most likely to perform well”.  Very surprisingly, over 90% of the identified students were the best or near the best of the students in their class, irrespective of their earlier performance.

It turns out that the students most likely to perform well were selected randomly.  It was the teacher’s  expectations that the student will perform well that determined the student’s performance!  Similarly, it is not hard to think that a good student’s performance can be destroyed by the lack of trust of a student (For more information, please lookup Pygmalion Effect. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pygmalion_effect)

This kural too reiterates the same effect – if a leader thinks somebody will fail, they will certainly fail!

While extolling the importance of generosity and sympathy, the Thirukkural is also very clear that is disgraceful to beg.  It cautions that the very thought of begging should be feared, in this chapter, iravachcham.

The kural highlights the shame in begging thusly: “Even if the giver is such a nice person who would give cheerfully, generously and without being judgmental, it is a million times better not to ask them than to ask them”

By making begging an act to be feared and ashamed of, Valluvar shifts the onus on to the asker.  This weight of disgrace loaded onto the act of begging makes it even more shameful to refuse somebody when they do beg.  (“If despite it being such a painful, shameful, disgraceful act a person is forced to ask you, and you refuse, you are to be despised” is the underlying thought process).  The great poet, Avvaiyaar, has enjoined that “It is good to learn, even if it means you need to beg to be able to learn”.  This shows that begging has always been despised but also focuses attention on the importance of education.

It is ironic that in a country that has for long years despised begging, the iconic image of the country is a beggar.

For people in authority, their foibles are not just a matter of personal preference.  They have the ability to impact their authority and their organizations security.  All espionage is based on this.  Therefore it is imperative for senior functionaries to minimize their shortcomings.  This chapter, kutrangkadithal, is about why it is necessary to actively eradicate one’s imperfections.

In this, the last kural in the chapter, Valluvar recognizes the inevitability of having vices.  Therefore he counsels “A king needs to prevent others from knowing on what gives him pleasure.  Further he should have the ability to indulge in his pet vices in secrecy.  If he is able to do this, he will reduce the security holes available to his enemies to exploit his weaknesses and thereby defeat their plots.”

The practical approach to both the recognition inescapability of vices and the solution to enjoy them with consequences minimized demonstrate his grasp of worldly knowledge.  In Tamil, the structure of the couplet also reveals his mastery over the language.

Valluvar has no hesitation nor doubts in condemning alcohol.  He is clear that it destroys one’s sensibilities, even morality and for that reason has to be avoided.  He places his chapter  on avoiding alcohol (kallunnaamai), in the section dealing with friendship (probably more correctly translated as the science/ philosophy of association) thus making it clear that the company of people who drink has to be avoided. Under no circumstances does he condone it – no alcohol, period!

The kural says: “To try to reason with a person who is drunk about why it is bad to be drunk is like lighting a lamp to go into the water searching for a drowning man.”  The analogy in this specific kural is delicious, in my opinion.

The usage of a lamp and reasoning, both of which shed light but are doused by, respectively, water and alcohol as a metaphor for each other in bringing out the futility in reasoning with a drunk demonstrates Valluvar’s mastery and experience.

Nothing has changed in the last 1500 years – it is still futile to argue with a drunk.  The pity is typically both the arguer and the arguee are drunk nowadays!

821: False Friends –

Seeridam kaanin yeridarkku patt tadai
Neraa niranthavar natpu

Alliances are the life blood any kingdom.  So are advisers to the king.  The Thirukkural goes into great depth on the various alliances and friendships that are and are not suitable for a king.  In this chapter, kooda natpu, he talks about inappropriate friendships.  Given the rest of the kurals, I personally believe Valluvar is talking about friendships with ex-enemies in this chapter.

The analogy that is used in this kural is quite interesting.  In a smithy, an anvil looks like it is supporting the sheet or bar of metal.  However, the actual use for an anvil is to provide the leverage to break that bar of metal when the blacksmith smites it.  Valluvar says that an enemy’s friendship is similar.  While it looks like he is a friend externally, internally his heart is filled with rancor and he is just looking for the right opportunity to strike.

While the advice given in the kural is sound, we have a historical counter point in Akbar’s approach of successfully befriending the Rajputs that he defeated in battle.  It would bear analysis on how Akbar was successful in this.

750: The Weakest link

Yenaimaatchi thagiayak kannum vinaimaatchi
Illaarkann illathu arann

For a country to be prosperous, it is not enough it has wealth; it also has to have unbreakable defense mechanisms. In this section, the Thirukkural outlines all the defence requirements of a nation.  Within that, there is a chapter on fortification (Arann) which specifies what constitutes a good fort.

As the last requirement for a good fort, Valluvar says that even if a fort has all the features of the best fort in the world, if the people who are responsible for the defense of the fort are deficient in execution, then the fort is weak and all its features quite useless.  The specific words he uses are ‘Vinaimaatchi’ which means “execution excellence’.  So, he not only requires adequate execution but demands excellence in execution.  We are all aware of the story of the Trojan horse!

This concept is still applicable today, despite the notable absence of forts. We all know security schema of a system or software could be the best in the world. However, most often it fails due to human error or negligence.  For example, easily crackable passwords and tail gating are the most common security breaches.

963: Dignity -

Perukkathu vendum panidal siriya
Surukkathu vendum uyarvu

The Thirukkural does not just advise kings and ministers on their behavior and responsibilities.  It clearly specifies what is expected of a citizen functioning as a part of the society too.  (Of course, there are entire chapters dedicated to how an individual should behave.)

This section talks about how to live with honour (Maanam) and this kural talks specifically about one’s conduct in times of prosperity and otherwise.
It says, “During times of prosperity, a man should comport himself humbly and without any airs. When poverty strikes, a man should behave without compromising his dignity.”

Essentially, one’s deportment should not be affected by one’s financial status but should be governed by one’s principles.
