“அறிவற்ற ஒருவனுக்கு விஷயம் அறிந்தவன்
அறிவுறுத்த நினைத்தால், அவனை முன்னவன் அறிவற்றவனாக நினைப்பான். மேலும், அறிவை காணாதவன், தான் அறிந்தது மட்டுமே
அறிவு என்றும் எண்ணிக்கொள்வான்” என்று மோனையாக விளக்குகிறது குறள்.
நம் நண்பர்கள் அறிவாளிகளாய் இருக்க
வேண்டும் என்பதில் வள்ளுவர் தெளிவாக இருக்கிறார்.
இதனால், முட்டாள்களை சரியாக அடையாளம் கண்டுகொள்வது அவசியமாகிறது. அறிவற்றவர்களை அடையாளம் காண்பதெப்படி என்று
விளக்கும் அதிகாரம் “புல்லறிவாண்மை”.
அறிவுறையை ஏற்று கொள்ள தன்னம்பிக்கை
வேண்டும். சொல்லப் போனால் என் அனுபவத்தில்,
ஒரு வல்லுனரின் அடையாளமே “எனக்கு தெரியாது” என்று சொல்லக்கூடிய தைரியம்
இருப்பதே. அது இல்லாதவர்கள், புது
விஷயங்களை எற்றுகொள்வதில்லை. வளராமல்,
மாறாமல் இருப்பது அறிவு இல்லை – வெறும் அபிப்ராயமே.
தம் அறிவை வளர்த்துக் கொள்ளாதவர்களிடம்
நட்பு கொண்டால் நாளிடைவில் அது வெறுப்பில் முடியும். இதனால்தான் வள்ளுவர் அறிவிள்ளதவர்களிடம் நட்பு
கூடாது என்று கூறுகிறாரோ என்று தோன்றுகிறது.
இந்தக் குறளில், சொல்வன்மை கவனிக்க
தக்கது. “காணுதல்” என்னும் சொற்றொடரை அறிவுக்கு
குறிப்பாக பயன்படுத்துவதால், அறிவற்றவர்களின் குருட்டுத்தனமும் அழகாக
வெளிப்படுகிறது, மோனையும் சிறப்பாக அமைகிறது.
“The mark of an idiot
is his closed attitude – if an intelligent man tries to educate an idiot, the
latter will disregard the advice and conversely, consider the former an
idiot. An idiot thinks only what he
knows is knowledge and nothing else matters” asserts this alliterative kural.
Valluvar cautions
against associating with stupid people, or even just intellectually inferior
people, multiple times in the Thirukural.
It is therefore important to be able to identify stupid people. This chapter, pullarivaanmai, talks about how
to identify such idiots.
In my experience, the
hallmark of an expert is his ability to say “I don’t know”. Accepting one’s ignorance is the first step
in acquiring knowledge. It requires
confidence in one’s own expertise and one’s ability to learn new things. (It
also implies that what he does know, he knows well!). An idiot, on the other hand, never accepts
it, partially as a result of his fear of being exposed.
Knowledge which does not
change, grow, improve, which is static is not knowledge at all. It is merely
dogma, at best an opinion. A closed attitude
therefore is a clear predictor of an idiot on the horizon. This attitude is further manifested by the
inability to accept as ‘knowledge’ anything outside the idiot’s ken.
Continued association
with a person who simply refuses to augment his knowledge will, in time, lead
to frustration. Perhaps this is the reason Valluvar consistently
cautions against associating with them.
Like the popular quote goes “Do not deal with the stupid , they drag you
down to their level and beat you with experience”!
Valluvar uses “seeing”
as a metaphor for intelligence in this kural.
This helps in the alliteration and more importantly, underlines the
deliberate blindness of the stupid.
