“To parents, the porridge dirtied by their children is better
even than the nectar that the Gods cherish”
In Hindu culture, producing children is not merely a requirement
for furthering one’s genes. A child is
necessary for one to cross the path charted out for a soul after death. In that context, this chapter would have
fulfilled the requirements of structure and content, had it merely stressed the
importance of children. However, this
chapter, puthalvarai peruthal, goes beyond that and focuses on the sheer joy
toddlers give parents.
Children are dear to their parents. Biology and sociology combine to elevate every action of
the tot to a acme of achievement in the eyes of otherwise stable parents. Every couple thinks it invented sex and every
parent thinks that they have had the bestest, most perfect child. This is why actions otherwise mundane or even
distasteful are imbued with the glow of perfection. The bard, by talking about the pleasure kids give
to their parents, elevates this chapter to a plane of true Truths.
In this couplet, Valluvar talks about how mere porridge,
that lowliest, blandest of dishes, which has further been contaminated by a
child’s fresh-from-play fingers tastes so heavenly merely because the kid in
question belongs to one. Any other kid and
the dish will meet the trash can and the child roundly condemned as a ‘dirty,
spoilt brat”. This is an experience all parents
have had and by using such a common example, he brings home the joy of ones’
own kids very powerfully.
In my limited knowledge, it is only in Indian literature
that childhood is so celebrated – every facet of childhood has been an
inspiration for a song or a story. For a
society so in love with its toddlers, it is such a pity that we systematically make
such conformists of them not much later.
“பெற்றோருக்கு, தம்முடைய குழந்தை
கைவிட்டு அளாவி அசிங்கப்படுத்திய கூழ் தேவர்கள் விரும்பும் அமுதைவிட ருசியாக
இருக்கும்” என்று அறுதியிட்டுக் கூறுகிறது குறள்.
குழந்தைகள் பெற்றோருக்கு தரும் இன்பத்திற்கு இணையே
இல்லை. “குழந்தை பெறுவதால் வம்சம்
தழைக்கும்”, “பிற்காலத்தில் ஆதரவு இருக்கும்” என்று கூறியிருந்தாலும்
திருக்குறளின் மேன்மைக்கு பங்கம் ஒன்றும் இருந்திருக்காது. ஆனால் அவர்களால் வரும் இன்பத்தை குறித்து
பாடுவதன் மூலம் வள்ளுவர் குழந்தைகளை ஏன் ‘செல்வம்’ என்று கூற வேண்டும் என்று
அழகாய் உணர்த்துகிறார்.
காதலர்கள் எல்லோரும் கலவியை தாங்கள் மட்டும்
கண்டுபிடித்ததாக எண்ணுவதும், பெற்றோர் தம் குழந்தைதான் உலகிற்ச்சிறந்த குழந்தை
என்று எண்ணுவதும் இயற்கையே. இந்த பாசம், தம்
மகவு செய்தது என்ற ஒரே காரணத்திற்காக அருவருப்பை மீறி அசிங்கத்தை அழகென ருசிக்கும்
படி செய்து விடுகிறது. மாற்றான் குழந்தையாய் இருந்தால், அசிங்கம்
மட்டுமே தெரியும்!
நான் அறிந்த வரையில் உலக இலக்கியத்தில் குழந்தைகளை
இவ்வளவு கொண்டாடுவது இந்திய இலக்கியம்
மட்டுமே. ஒவ்வொரு செய்கையையும், ஒவ்வொரு
பருவத்தையும் இவ்வளவு நுணுக்கமாய் இரசித்து அனுபவித்து எழுதுபவர்கள் நாமே! இவ்வளவு இரசித்த குழந்தையை, சற்று நேரம்
கழித்து அவ்வளவு கொடுமையாய் பள்ளியில் சிறகு ஒடிப்பதை நினைத்தால் தான் வருத்தம்
வருகிறது.
