‘Madi’ means lethargy in Tamil. Therefore its opposite, madiyinmai, is best
denoted by the word energy or enthusiasm.
This chapter talks about the importance of being energetic is to a king.
Valluvar identifies four markers for a person destined
to be unsuccessful: procrastination, forgetfulness, lethargy and sleepiness. He
says that these are like siren calls to a person who is going to fail. Like the fabled Sirens, the short-term pleasure
from these activities seduces those who seek them and makes them willingly travel
towards long term failure.
Metaphorically, he likens yielding to these siren
calls to attempting to cross the ocean on rickety rafts – an activity doomed to
failure before it starts.
