திருக்குறளில் கொல்லாமை மற்றும் புலால் உண்ணாமை பற்றி மிகவும் தெளிவாக கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.  இந்த இயலில், வள்ளுவர் எல்லா வகையான கொலையையும் சாடுகிறார்.

குறிப்பாக இந்தக் குறளில், திருவள்ளுவர் தனது கொள்கையின் தாக்கத்தை சிறிதும் குறைக்காமல், கொலை செய்பவர்கள் மிருகங்களுக்கு சமமானவர்கள் (மாக்கள்) என்று கூறுகிறார்.  மேலும், அவர்கள் தாங்கள் செய்வது இழிச் செயல் என்று தெரியாமல் செய்தாலும், இது பற்றி விஷயம் அறிந்தவர்கள் அவர்கள் செய்வதை கீழான செய்கையாகவே எண்ணுவர்.  அவர்களையும் சிருமையாகவே மதிபிடுவர் என்று தெளிவாக கூறுகிறார்.

இந்த குறளில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க விஷயம் வள்ளுவர் கொலை செய்பவர்களுக்கு எந்த சலுகையும் அளிக்கவில்லை.  எக்காரணம் கொண்டு எதை, யாரை கொலை செய்தாலும் அது நீச்ச செயலே என்பதில் வள்ளுவ பெருமான் சந்தேகம் காட்டவில்லை.

The Thirukkural is rarely prescriptive or judgmental.  About most things it expresses itself well with erudition and wisdom; rarely with any force.  However about vegetarianism and about abstinence from killing it is very vehement.  This specific chapter, kollaamai, means ‘Not Killing” and Valluvar has some choice words for people who kill. The point to be noted is that this covers all killing, not just murder. (This is another reason why he is considered a Jain). 

In this kural, he pulls no punches.  He says that people who kill for a living are bestial.  Even if  they may not understand that their actions are base, in the judgment of people who know about the impact of such acts they  (and their actions) will be considered uncouth and barbaric. 

Valluvar does not seem to (pardon the choice of words!) mince any words in condemning killing.  No exceptions – anybody who kills for a living from a soldier to a butcher, is base.

One might say he has a kolaveri about kolai (killing)!
