397: An uneducated man is a fool– கல்லாதவன் முட்டாள்

கல்வி என்பது ஒரு அரசனுக்கு அத்யாவசியம் என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை.  வள்ளுவர் அது மற்றவர்க்கும் தேவை என்பதை தெளிவாக்கவே இந்த அதிகாரத்தை படைத்துள்ளார்.

“படித்தவனுக்கு எல்லா நாடும் தன் நாடு போலவே.  எல்லா ஊரும் தன் சொந்த ஊரைப்போலவே.  எங்கு சென்றாலும் அவனுக்கு மதிப்பும் மரியாதையும் உண்டு.  எங்கு சென்றாலும் அவனால் தழைக்க முடியும்.  அப்படி இருக்கையில் சாகும் வரையிலும் ஒருவன் கல்வி இல்லாமல் எப்படி இருக்கிறான்?” என்று குழம்புகிறது குறள்.

கல்வி பெற முடிந்தும் கல்லாமல் இருப்பவன் முட்டாள் என்பதில் சந்தேகம் இல்லை. 

என் வாழ்க்கையிலேயே இதை நான் கண்ணார கண்டுள்ளேன்.  எங்கள் வீட்டு வேலைக்காரியின் மகன் மின்சார விளக்கு வசதி உள்ளது என்பதால் எங்கள் வீட்டில்தான் படிப்பார்.  (அதற்கு பிரதிபலனாக துணிகளை அயர்ன் (iron) செய்துகொடுப்பார்).  அப்படி கஷ்டப்பட்டு படித்ததனால், வாழ்க்கையில் முன்னேறி ஒரு பெரிய நிறுவனத்தில் மேலதிகாரியாக இருக்கிறார்.  இந்த உயர்ச்சி கல்வியால் வந்ததே.  இது கல்வியால் மட்டுமே வரக்குடியது என்பது குறிப்பிட தக்கது.

The necessity of an education for a king is undisputable.  However Valluvar is equally sure that a good education is necessary for everybody.  He sets forth his thoughts on learning in this chapter, kalvi.

“To an educated man, every country is like his own.  Any town is his own. He will be respected and valued everywhere he goes.  There are no obstacles, other than his own striving, to his prosperity anywhere in the world.  When it so obvious that education is such a good thing, why is it that there are people who never get an education even unto their death?” puzzles the kural.

There can be no doubt that a person who has the means and opportunity to get educated and yet refuses to learn is stupid. 

The Indian IT story is as much a celebration of Indian ingenuity as it is an expression of the cashability of one’s education.  Before that, the only careers open to an educated man were doctor, engineer, accountant, IAS, Government service & bank service.  The selling point of most of them was mere job security and a means to pay the bills.  Wealth was for the wealthy.  The democratization of wealth by the participation in the IT story, even at such miniscule scale, has wrought such wonders on the economic landscape.  Imagine the tempest it will unleash if we are able to educate everybody and provide them with the opportunity to utilize their education.

We can but dream on … (sigh).
