“பக்தர்களின் மனமாகிய மலரின் மேல் இருக்கும் இறைவனின் மாட்சிமை பொருந்திய திருவடிகளை பற்றியவர்கள் இந்த உலகத்தில் நீண்ட நாள் வாழ்வார்கள்” என்ற எளிய கருத்து கொண்டது இந்த குறள்.

வள்ளுவர் ஒரு ஜைன முனிவர் என்ற கருத்துக்கு இந்த குறள் ஒரு சான்றாக கூறபடுகிறது.  திருக்குறளில் எங்கும் ‘இறை’ என்றால் எந்த தெய்வத்தை குறிக்கும் என்பது தெளிவாக இல்லை. கடவுள் வாழ்த்து உள்ளதால், அவர் நிச்சயமாக பௌத்தர் அல்ல என்பது மட்டுமே தெளிவாக உள்ளது.  இளங்கோ ‘மலர்மிசை ஏகினான்’ என்ற சொற்றொடரை மகாவீரரை குறிப்பிட்டு பாடுகிறார்.  எனவே வள்ளுவரும் மகாவீரரையே குறிப்பிடுகிறார் என்ற கருத்து பரவலாக நிலவுகிறது.

வள்ளுவரது தெய்வம் எதுவாக இருப்பினும், ஏழு வார்த்தைகளில் அவர் கூறும் ஞானம் இணையற்றது என்பதில் சந்தேகம் இல்லை.

As part of the preface, the Thirukkural has a chapter praising ‘God’.  It is never clear from within the Thirukkural which ‘God’  Valluvar is referring to.  Because of the reference to a God, it is clear that he is not Buddhist.  However, none of the traditional Hindu Trinity or Shakthi have been specifically referred to in the kurals.  Hence it is felt that he is not a Hindu but a Jain. (There are other arguments, based on the import of the kurals, that claim that Valluvar is implying Vedic structure and principles, deriving from Manusmriti etc that ‘prove’ he is a Hindu)

This kural is often cited as a proof that Valluvar is a Jain.  The couplet itself is quite simple: “People who surrender at the honoured feet of Him who stands atop flowers(the devotee’s hearts?)  will live a long life on this world”.

The argument is that Ilango, who wrote the great Tamil epic Silapadikaram, referred to Mahaveera in exactly the same words ‘மலர்மிசை ஏகினான்’ (The One Who Stands on the Flower) as Valluvar.  This is the argument for this kural referring to Mahaveera.

Whatever Valluvar’s religion, the wisdom that he has abstracted in strict metre & structure is, no doubt, universal!
