“பாடலோடு பொருந்தாத இராகத்தினால் என்ன பயன்?  ஒருவரை பார்க்கும் போது அவரது உள்ளத்தை அறியவில்லை என்றால் கண்ணிருந்தும் என்ன பயன்?” என்று ஆழ்ந்த அனுதாபத்தினால் வரும் புரிதலை விளக்குகிறது குறள்.

“கண்ணோட்டம்” என்றால் “தன்னோடு ப்யின்றாரை கண்டால் அவர் கூரியன மறக்கமாட்டாமை” என்று பரிமேலழகர் விளக்குகிறார்.  மற்ற உரையாசிரியர்கள் இதை அவ்வளவாக விளக்கவில்லை.  என் அறிவுக்கு எட்டிய வரையில், இதை “பிறர் மனதை உணர்தல்” என்று கூறுவது சரியாக இருக்கும் என்று தோன்றுகிறது.  தற்காலத்தில் “emotional intelligence” என்று கூறலாம். 

வள்ளுவர் இதை அரசியலில் வைப்பதால் அவர் இது ஒரு மன்னருக்கு தேவையான திறமை என்று கூறுகிறார் எனக்கொள்ளலாம்.  அதிகாரத்தில் இருக்கும் எவருக்குமே எதிரில் இருப்பவர் உள்ளத்தில் என்ன இருக்கிறது என்று புரிய வேண்டும்.  இல்லையென்றால் மேம்போக்கான முடிவுகளை எடுக்க நேரிடும்.  இது குறிப்பறிதலில்லிருந்து சற்று மாறு பட்டது – அது கூற முற்படுவதை புரிந்துகொள்வது; இது அவர் கூறாறதை புரிந்து கொள்வது.

“Of what use is the music that is dissonant with the song?  Of what use is sight that cannot empathize with the person in front of you?” asks the kural, underlining the importance of comprehending rather than looking.

The chapter, kannottam, is not very easily translatable.  An authoritative translation by Parimelazhagar says that it is “remembering what a person said on looking at him”.  I would translate it as understanding a person’s feelings.  It is a form of emotional intelligence.  By talking about this under the qualities required for a ruler, Valluvar highlights the importance of an executive having a deep psychological understanding of people.

Any person who interacts with people needs to understand their feelings, their motivations, their drivers if you will without them having to explicitly state it.  Without this basic competence, it is impossible for a person to grow up to interact or direct a large set of people.  Valluvar also talks about the king’s ability to understand non-verbal communication elsewhere in the Thirukkural.  That, I believe refers to being able to receive a signal sent by the other person. This emotional intelligence, on the other hand, refers to the ability understand the import of a message that is not being transmitted.
