Unlike
contemporary times when compatibility and liking are the only criteria for
friendship, Valluvar has a clear idea that friendship has to be appropriate. Perhaps it is a function of increasing
democratization in all walks of life. He proceeds to list the consequences of
inappropriate friendship in multiple chapters.
This specific chapter, pethamai, talks about associating with fools.
“It is a
pleasure to associate with stupid people because there is no great pain when
one stops interacting with them” tells this kural, quite superciliously.
It is quite
clear that for Valluvar, a friendship has to have a clear benefit. Without the benefit, he considers friendship
not only useless but a waste of time. He
does distinguish between being loving and friendship but I find it very
difficult to agree with this kural. This instrumental definition is probably
alright if once assumes he is talking about one’s associations with people for
a purpose. However, if one chooses to
interpret these guidelines for ‘friends’ as we understand it today, and worse,
apply these guidelines, one would soon be left with no friends.
True, it is
probably not very profitable to have a friendship with an idiot but is it
really friendship if profit is the only motive?

Would be more interesting if you could translate the Kural first, so I can know verbatim what it means, then go on to provide your commentary! Don't you think so.
