849: Identifying Idiots -

            Material Matters, Friendship, Stupidity

Kaanaathaan kaatuvaan thaankaanaan kaanaathaan
Kandaanaam thaankanda vaaru

“The mark of an idiot is his closed attitude – if an intelligent man tries to educate an idiot, the latter will disregard the advice and conversely, consider the former an idiot.  An idiot thinks only what he knows is knowledge and nothing else matters” asserts this alliterative kural.

Valluvar cautions against associating with stupid people, or even just intellectually inferior people, multiple times in the Thirukural.  It is therefore important to be able to identify stupid people.  This chapter, pullarivaanmai, talks about how to identify such idiots.

In my experience, the hallmark of an expert is his ability to say “I don’t know”.  Accepting one’s ignorance is the first step in acquiring knowledge.  It requires confidence in one’s own expertise and one’s ability to learn new things. (It also implies that what he does know, he knows well!).  An idiot, on the other hand, never accepts it, partially as a result of his fear of being exposed.

Knowledge which does not change, grow, improve, which is static is not knowledge at all. It is merely dogma, at best an opinion.  A closed attitude therefore is a clear predictor of an idiot on the horizon.  This attitude is further manifested by the inability to accept as ‘knowledge’ anything outside the idiot’s ken.

Continued association with a person who simply refuses to augment his knowledge will, in time, lead to frustration.   Perhaps this is the reason Valluvar consistently cautions against associating with them.  Like the popular quote goes “Do not deal with the stupid , they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience”!

Valluvar uses “seeing” as a metaphor for intelligence in this kural.  This helps in the alliteration and more importantly, underlines the deliberate blindness of the stupid.

799: How much treachery hurts -

If a ‘friend’ does not help us when we are in trouble, that betrayal rankles within us until we die” says the kural, explaining the consequences on us of a friend not discharging his duty.

This chapter, natpaaraithal, explains how one assesses one’s friends, after having started a relationship with them.

For Valluvar, ‘friend’ is not just a Facebook status.  It is an honoured position with responsibilities, rights and rewards.  Like any valuable role, friends are selected, according to him, rather than accumulated by chance.  He recommends terminating a friendship if the ‘friend’ leads us astray or is not helping us in the larger journey of life – that of breaking the cycle of birth.

It is also not often appreciated that while he says “this is how your friends have to behave, to be recognized as friends”  he is also clearly implying that that is how we ourselves should behave to be rated as ‘friend’ by those whom we respect.  This self-analysis is expected and even required.

Again, the bard excels in his understanding of the human mind – while it is quite probable that we will forget all but the grandest assistance that we received from our friends, the merest slip in them coming to our assistance will stay fresh in our memory forever.  We may forgive but rarely will we forget!

PS: This kural is also interpreted as “The betrayal will be remembered even at the point of one’s death”.  I personally feel that is less likely than the explanation I have given.

946: All the diseases love a glutton –

             Material Matters, Friendship, Medicine

Izhivarinthu unbaankann inbampol nirkkum
Kazhiper iraiyaankann noi

A man who eats the right amount will always be happy as he will never be troubled by disease.  A glutton, on the other hand, will always be sick” says the kural, highlighting the long term benefits of a good diet.

In the section on friendship, Valluvar talks about various bad habits and evil actions and cautions against them generally.  Presumably this is because evil requires company.  In this chapter, marunthu, he changes pace a bit and talks about causes of diseases and the various ways of preventing them.

Today, there is a veritable media blitz on the evils of over-eating and the benefits of a good diet.  If you have not been living under a rock in the last 20-25 years, you know that gluttony is not only a sin but is also bad for your health.   Therefore the first reaction on reading the kural could be “Why is Valluvar talking about such an obvious thing?  Was he just filling up the count to 1330?”  One should realize that it is with the benefit of hindsight.

Even when I was a boy, a trencherman was admired. Eating well, and a bit more, was the ticket to health and strength.  Keeping in mind these erroneous attitudes were prevalent as recently as 30 years ago, our appreciation for the wisdom expressed in the kural increases.   Remember, this was a time when it was thought that disease were a result of imbalance of the various kinds of humours like bile, phlegm etc.  (Valluvar himself says this in the first kural in this chapter).  Therefore, to me, the insight on the benefits of a restricted diet is astounding.

913: A Prostitute’s embrace -

Prostitutes are “Material Girls” literally, according to Valluvar. They don’t love you.  They are only interested in the money you will give them.  Their embrace reflects this – it is perfunctory and without feeling.  It is similar to the embrace that undertakers bestow on stranger’s corpses when they handle them in rooms without light – driven by money, necessity  and without any love in the act.”  Thus goes the odious comparison from Valluvar in this kural.  The very repugnance that he induces in the reader at the metaphor reflects his deep distaste for soliciting prostitutes.

Like his proscription of gambling and drinking, Valluvar does not see any extenuating circumstances for engaging a street walker.  He roundly and unreservedly condemns it in this chapter, varaivinmagalir.

The name of the chapter means “Women without wedding”.

When an undertaker handles a corpse, he only does it for the money.  Even if he is put-off by the carcass, he still cannot exhibit his disgust. On the contrary he has to display every sign of caring when he handles the body, perhaps even going as far as to embrace it during the course of his ministrations.  The embrace from a hooker is identical in intent and purpose.  She too is thinking only of the money and pretending affection.  The only motivation for the embrace is necessity – you wont pay otherwise.  Therefore, cautions the bard, avoid seeking such strumpets.

It is a disgusting comparison; but it is only a reflection of the deep disgust he feels for this association.

875: Handling Two Enemies –

Material Maters, Friendship, Handling Enemies

Thanthunai indraal pagaiyirandaal thaanoruvan

“When you have two enemies and you are alone, without the ability or the alliances to withstand their attack, the smart move is to make all efforts to convert one of them into a dear friend” – this is how the kural solves the puzzle of a king caught on the horns of a dilemma.

The Friendship that Valluvar talks about in the Thirukkural is not only about individuals – it also talks about friendship between nations, probably more correctly translated as alliances.  In the section talking about such friendships, this chapter, pagaithiranarithal, advocates avoidance of conflict where possible, specifically when one is weak.  When that fails, the chapter also gives some practical advice on handling that too.

“An enemies’ enemy is my friend” is a well-known adage attributed to Chanakya.  This kural addresses a slightly different situation – when an enemy is joins hands with his friend.  It is never a good idea to open conflicts on two fronts as Hitler found out to his loss in World War II.  Hence, the kural solves it by advising one to convert one of them into a friend thereby converting it to situation of “A friend’s enemy is an enemy of mine too”.  This halves the problem while strengthening one’s situation.  It is also a better situation than hiring mercenaries as there is an alignment of objectives unlike what happened in Scotland where the Scots invited trouble in their fight against Saxons by hiring mercenaries.

This is a very practical kural, particularly in a warlike culture which considered a wound on the back as a mark of shame even if it was acquired because of an arrow penetrating through the torso from the front!

940: Fatal Attraction –

Material Matters – Friendship  –  Gambling

Izhathoroo-um kaadhalikkum soothepol thunbam
Uzhathoroo-um kaathatru uyir

While the section is named Friendship, in my opinion, the Thirukkural paints on a far vaster canvas.  I believe the a more accurate interpretation of the word, natpiyal, would be something akin to “The consequences of your friendship”.  Gambling necessarily involves another person.  Since there is nothing good about gambling, any person is indulging your urge to gamble, has to be necessarily a bad friend.  This chapter, soothu, talks about all the
consequences of gambling and qualities of a gambler.

“When you are gambling, the more you lose, the greater your love for gambling, fueled by your urge to recoup your losses.  In a similar manner, the more your body is hurt, the more you start loving life” says the kural, comparing the basic urge to live to the love of gambling.

Anybody who has gambled even slightly is aware of the all consuming urge to recover the lost money “on the next throw”.  One need look no further than our own Mahabharatha’s Yudishtir for examples.  However, I am not too sure that I am in agreement with the analogy.
If your body suffers grievous harm, typically you give up the will to live.  However, since the Thirukkural is a peer reviewed manuscript which has passed 2000 years of scrutiny by far abler scholars than I, obviously the fault is in my understanding. The closest I can come to understanding the aptness of the analogy is when you have a near death experience – after that, your appreciation of your life & your second chance definitely goes up.  However, you are that much loath to put your body in a similar risk again, at least willingly.  That is not true of gambling and hence the analogy breaks down, in my opinion.

I am eager to hear from others on how this analogy is correct.

Balaji, in the comments, has come up with an interpretation that would cover this scenario admirably.  He says that how ever much one is troubled physically due to disease or wounds, one does not willingly give up life. (The suicides are, obviously, outliers.)  Looked at that way, it is a good analogy to gambling as how ever much you get hurt gambling you want to continue gambling.

When your friendship is old and deep, our interactions with such friends are special.  They have rights and freedoms granted by our intimacy.  (This is also the reason Valluvar has a lot to say about choosing friends!)  This chapter, pazhaimai, talks about the liberties that old friends are allowed to take.  In fact, the chapter’s title just means antiquity.

“When an old friend does something for us voluntarily, even if we don’t like it, we have to accept it (and the consequences of the action) as though we have performed that action.    If that does not happen, of what use is the friendship.  The friendship itself is meaningless if such liberties cannot be taken” says the kural which grants a general power of attorney to old friends.

I think this essentially means that you endorse the friend’s action in public, come what may.  You may chide him or her in private later.  I also think that this does not apply to professional matters, however old the friendship is.
