When wealth accumulates with an intelligent man who is capable of understanding the needs of others who are unable earn a living, and provide for them, it is like water accumulating in the common village well – available to all the needy when they need it” says the kural, anticipating the creation of banking.

When a man chooses to live in society, he has to not only follow written laws and rules in his conduct, but also the unwritten & implicit guidelines of behaviour imposed on him by the society at large. This chapter, oppuravarithal, talks about conforming to those unspoken standards of behaviour.

The poet feels that it is not enough to give when asked.  He expects a sensitive and intelligent man to be able to anticipate the needs of the less fortunate and provide for them voluntarily.  When this is done voluntarily, the expectation is that those who cannot earn a living due to whatever circumstances are also taken care of.  Such a philosophy, if adopted by the wealthy, would render the current “Occupy Wall Street”  protests moot.  Veritably, this is the essence of communism.

However, I feel this is not a practical kural, contrary to Valluvar’s usual “no nonsense” approach.  Such a policy will create an army of claimants to the wealth as it is easy to convince even oneself that one “needs” it and one “cannot” earn a living.  The other concern I have is a bit meta – the entire chapter talks largely about helping the ‘needy’ of one’s own volition.  Surely there is more to conforming to societal norms than giving unasked?

I like the kural because displays Valluvar’s knowledge of economics – the creation of a buffer for shocks is very important in levelling and controlling spikes.  His choice of metaphor – a common well – to convey the concept is very apt in that it reinforces the underlying qualities of “common”, “accumulative” and “unspoilt”.

190: Stopping Slandering –

If only the gossip, who goes around slandering others, realizes the error of his ways … !  Such a realization would stand him in good stead throughout his entire life and prevent a lot of heartburn” laments the kural.

In my opinion, an ascetic life is easy.  The only person of concern to the ascetic is he himself and any physical hardship that he undergoes is a result of his own volition.  A family man, on the other hand has to live in society and interact with others who have their own aspirations.  His conduct has to meet the expectations of the others as a whole and per se, he has to co-operate and co-habit with the other members of his society.  That is a lot harder than the ascetic’s escapist way of life!  When living in society it is necessary that one does not slander others.  This chapter, purangkooraamai, talks about the evils of malicious gossiping.

"Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?” is an oft quoted saying from the bible.  The import of this kural reflects that.

However, Valluvar has layered meanings in this kural.  He is not interested in merely questioning the credentials of the slanderer; if so, he need not have worried about the harm caused to the gossip’s life.  His purpose is deeper.

“If the gossip realizes the harm he is causing and therefore the sin he is accumulating he will stop gossiping. If he stops gossiping, he stops accumulating sin that prevents him from liberating himself from the cycle of life, because, after all the sin accumulates to the soul which is permanent.  By lessening his burden of sin, he reduces the distress his soul goes through in this and future lives.”  This is the deeper meaning of the kural.

He underlines the rarity of such self-realization by his choice of words: “If only …”.

148: Dominating your desires –

The quality that makes noble men not covet another’s wife highlights not only their moral rectitude and their dominance over their senses, but also their sterling character” says the kural, mincing no words in condemning adultery.

For an illicit liaison to come about, two people have to slip from the moral path – from the demand side the wife of another man and on the supply side, the man who desires her.  Either can individually prevent it.  (I guess a married man eyeing an unmarried woman is not covered as it was quite common for a man to have multiple wives until quite recently!)  This chapter, piranil vizhaiyaamai, addresses evils of adultery from the supply side.

Adultery has its origins in lust. It is a willful, deliberate and physical act.  There is no such thing as mental adultery.   However, an adulterous relationship, in itself heinous and traitorous, also sows the seeds for even more evil.  It can be considered a gateway sin in that context.  Therefore Valluvar does not pull any punches when roundly censuring this act. In fact he goes to the extent of saying that whatever other sins a man commits, there is still hope for him if he is not an adulterer too.  There can be no two opinions that adultery is a sin, a crime and a betrayal.  The cuckold is never pitied, only ridiculed.

However, the question that crossed my mind was this “While extant, was adultery so rampant that Valluvar chose to devote one entire chapter to it out the 133 in his magum opus?”  I am not being facetious.  Either adultery was as prevalent as gambling or drinking in those times and therefore invited Valluvar’s ire or the latter misdemeanors have grown multifold since his times.  Surely infidelity, while present globally, is not as common as trespasses such as gambling?  Or is it that our moral compass is so degraded that we have become inured to the ramifications of adultery?  I really don’t know.

One of the commentators on the Thirukkrual has suggested that while manliness or dominance can be defined as the overcoming of external enemies, uber-manliness or total dominance (I am still trying to find an English equivalent of peraanmai (பேராண்மை))  denotes the conquering of that insidious inner enemy – lust.  It sounded like a definition worth sharing.

129: Wounding Words –

            Spirituality, Domesticity, Self Control

Theeyinaar suttapun ullaarum aaraathe
Naavinaar sutta vadu

The searing caused by a firebrand, though physically painful,  is forgotten mentally fairly quickly.  However, the mental hurt caused by an inappropriate, unthinking, cruel word can rankle & fester for a long time, even though there is no physical wound.” Classifies the kural.

To lead a domestic life does not require skills, it merely requires existence.  However, to live domestic life well – that takes skills, competence and qualifications.  Once such qualification is control self and the various senses and desires, the thesis of this chapter, adakkamudaimai.

For a successful and meaningful domestic life, one needs to be able to control all the five senses.  The rest of the kurals in this chapter talk about why such self control is required. This specific kural talks about the impact on the other person, if one were to lose control of one’s words.  By searing another with ill-considered, mean, cruel words a person alters his or her relationship with the other person for a long time as the hurt rankles in the other person.  The problem is worse if the other person is a subordinate.  Hence it is obvious that one has to have control on what one says at all times.

The kural also stands out for its irony – it calls the searing a wound but the insult a scar, belying the transitory nature of the former compared to the permanence of the latter.

266: True penance –

Spirituality, Asceticism, Penance

Thavanjeivaar thankarumanj seivaarmatr trellaar
Avanjeivaar aasaiyut pattu

“Only ascetics who undertake proper penances would be able to perform their duties.  The penances of others, who are lead astray by desire, will only lead to disaster” says this kural, in what appears to be circular logic.

Before examining the import of the kural, a few words about the section – thuravaraviyal. This refers to asceticism as a means of attaining the Ultimate Truth.  As I have said earlier, this is not a necessary condition for salvation and is inherently a difficult path.  The chosen way is very difficult and does not condone any slippage – success only comes to those who are able to stay on the path, whatever the cost.  On the other hand, for a lay person, it is very difficult to differentiate between a true ascetic and a charlatan.  Hence it is a very slippery route to deliverance.  However, for those hardy souls who have chosen this way, doing penance is an essential part of their activities. This very chapter, thavam, defines such penance as being able to withstand  bodily punishment while ensuring that one causes no harm to anybody.

The resolution to the apparent circularity in the logic lies in the belief that one’s action affects one’s path and even salvation.  For a true ascetic, the goal is nirvana.  The penance that is undertaken is way to reach that goal and hence the said ascetic performs it as a duty without getting distracted by desires.  For a false ascetic, however, the penance becomes the goal. The motivation is not moksha but transient pleasure like praise from others for being an ascetic or attaining something other than salvation.  The diversion to minor goals of so powerful a tool like penance only indicates the immaturity of the person.

From a literary standpoint, the kural is good but not remarkable.  However from layers that are compressed in those seven words, the kural is astounding.

An arrow, though straight, is by action an evil thing because it  kills.  A harp, though crooked in appearance, is by action good because of beautiful the music it produces.  Similarly, ascetics and hermits should be judged, not by their appearance but by the consequences of their actions” is the practical advice of this kural.

Nowhere in the Thirukkural (and as far as I know, in Hinduism in general) is asceticism a requirement for salvation. Any normal householder, as long as he or she adheres to the dharma of a householder, can attain salvation.  Indeed, there are treatises that advocate the householder’s path as the best and easiest path to nirvana.  (It is another matter that the ‘normal’ householders (grihastas) are the economic engine which sustains a society where ¾ of the population by class is engaged in non-productive activities – brahmacharis, Vanaprasthas and Sanyasis!) In that situation, a person choosing a hermit’s path to salvation has to match his actions to his stated goal of renunciation.  This chapter, koodaaozhukkam, warns the readers against false ascetics whose demonstrated morals do not match their lofty goals.

The advice imparted by the kural is very relevant today, when every religion has its evangelists ready to part you from your money in return for guaranteed rapture.  One only has to look at the likes of the currently infamous Nithyananda, who was caught with his vesti down, literally.  Despite that he still commands a huge following who still hail him as a god head.  It is a wonder to me why these people are so gullible.  (This pattern of exposure of false god men with very little effect on the faith of their followers has been repeated in every culture in the world.   We are in no way unique in this!)

All we have to do to judge these god men is to judge them by the consequences of their actions – bad outcomes imply bad god men.  For too long have we followed preachers, ( like the one in the Phil Collins’ song who bawls “Don’t do as I dooo; just do as I saaaay”), unquestioningly in a manner which would make sheep proud.  Just use the simple litmus test advocated by this kural and you will never be fooled by another false god-man of any ilk.  (Somehow, I doubt that that will happen.)

Either this 2000 year old advice is easier to read than to follow or people are just plain stupid!

A regular bloke trying to be reasonably happy with his reasonable income and loving wife is the most common kind of bloke.  Not a hero. Not a king. Not a genius. Not a poet.  How that person, in the company of his wife during the normal course of his life, can earn spiritual credits is the basis of this section, illaraviyal and specifically this chapter, ilvaazhkai.  Asceticism is not the only way to that goal.

“Earn your wealth in a blameless fashion, without committing any moral trespass. Share the wealth so earned with your family according to their needs.  If you do this, your lineage will never die out, as long as there is time” – this is the meaning of the kural.

One of the precepts of ‘memory dependent lifecycle’ religions of India is that a sin committed in a lifetime may have to be paid for by good deeds over several lifetimes.  Until it is paid for, there is no deliverance for that soul.  Since the goal is to attain mukthi as fast as possible, this is a bad thing.  Also, if your lineage collectively commits enough sins, it could be ‘punished’ by being wiped out.

Therefore, if the wealth is gained morally, you avoid one of the greatest dangers to your lineage and your own salvation.  Additionally, by sharing the wealth, you ensure that your lineage does survive, in a physical sense and your own memory survives and hence in a fame sense too.

The watershed moment in Valmiki’s life when a sadhu asked him to “Go find out if your family is as willing to share the sins that you are committing in acquiring this wealth as they are in partaking of this wealth”.  The question and its consequences made him see the error of his ways and eventually he went on to write the Ramayana.  This is the essence of this kural.

140: Conformance to norms –

The thesis of this chapter, ozhukkamudaimai, is about what constitutes good conduct.  Originally, this referred to conformance to the strictures of conduct as defined for ones’ caste.  Latter scholars have chosen to interpret this more generally as social conduct or character.

“The goal of education is wisdom, not knowledge.  Wisdom is acceptable only if it is backed by conduct.  The standards of good conduct are defined by conformance to the norms set up by exemplars and accepted by society at large.  A scholar who does not understand this and proceeds on mere bookish knowledge is an idiot, despite the number and merits of the books he may have read”, announces this uncompromising kural.

The idea that good conduct or character is defined by what is acceptable to society and the mores of that time is very important. This idea is what makes the latter scholars’ interpretation of this kural acceptable, in my opinion.
More importantly, this concept establishes the dynamic nature of societal acceptability.  While opinion leaders and moulders may push the boundaries of what is acceptable, if they push it too far from what the general public will stand for, they will find themselves alone, without followers.  This also explains why social or cultural change is so hard to bring about – it is necessarily an incremental process.

329:Butchers are barbarians –

Kolaivinaiya raagiya maakkal pulaivinayar

The Thirukkural is rarely prescriptive or judgmental.  About most things it expresses itself well with erudition and wisdom; rarely with any force.  However about vegetarianism and about abstinence from killing it is very vehement.  This specific chapter, kollaamai, means ‘Not Killing” and Valluvar has some choice words for people who kill. The point to be noted is that this covers all killing, not just murder. (This is another reason why he is considered a Jain).

In this kural, he pulls no punches.  He says that people who kill for a living are bestial.  Even if  they may not understand that their actions are base, in the judgment of people who know about the impact of such acts they  (and their actions) will be considered uncouth and barbaric.

Valluvar does not seem to (pardon the choice of words!) mince any words in condemning killing.  No exceptions – anybody who kills for a living from a soldier to a butcher, is base.
One might say he has a kolaveri about kolai (killing)!
