ஈகை குறித்து பலவும் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ள திருக்குரளிலேயே பிச்சை கேட்பது  கேவலமானது என்ற கருத்தும் அதிலேயே (இந்த அதிகாரத்தில்) வலியுருத்தபட்டுள்ளது. கேட்பது அவமானமானாலும், கேட்டுக் கொடுக்காமலிருப்பது அதைவிட கேவலம் என்ற எண்ணமும் விரவியிருக்கிறது.

“நாம் போய்கேட்டால் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன், கஞ்சத்தனமில்லாமல், உடனே கொடுக்ககூடிய நல்லவ்ர்களிடமும் பிச்சை கேட்பதை விட கேட்காமல் இருப்பதே  கோடி மடங்கு நல்லது.” என்று கேட்பதில் உள்ள கேவலத்தை குறள் கூறுகிறது.

மேலெழுந்தவாரியாக பிச்சை கேட்காதே என்று மட்டும் கூறாமல், பிச்சை கேட்க அஞ்ச வேண்டும் என்று கூறுவதன் முலம் பிச்சை கேட்காமல் இருப்பதில் உள்ள பொறுப்பை கேட்பவரிடம் வைக்கிறார், வள்ளுவர்.  இதை ஔவையாரின் “பிச்சை புகினும், கற்கை நன்றே” என்ற கருத்துடன் ஒப்பிட்டால், கல்வியின் முக்கியத்துவம் நமக்கு புரியும்.

While extolling the importance of generosity and sympathy, the Thirukkural is also very clear that is disgraceful to beg.  It cautions that the very thought of begging should be feared, in this chapter, iravachcham.

The kural highlights the shame in begging thusly: “Even if the giver is such a nice person who would give cheerfully, generously and without being judgmental, it is a million times better not to ask them than to ask them”

By making begging an act to be feared and ashamed of, Valluvar shifts the onus on to the asker.  This weight of disgrace loaded onto the act of begging makes it even more shameful to refuse somebody when they do beg.  (“If despite it being such a painful, shameful, disgraceful act a person is forced to ask you, and you refuse, you are to be despised” is the underlying thought process).  The great poet, Avvaiyaar, has enjoined that “It is good to learn, even if it means you need to beg to be able to learn”.  This shows that begging has always been despised but also focuses attention on the importance of education.

It is ironic that in a country that has for long years despised begging, the iconic image of the country is a beggar.

1017: Honour before life – மானம் உயிரினும் மேலானது

நாணால் உயிரைத் துறப்பர் உயிர்ப்பொருட்டால்

தம் செயல்கள் தம் குணங்களுக்கும் கொள்கைகளுக்கும் ஏற்றவாறு இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று நினைப்பர் உயர்ந்தவர் .  அப்படி இல்லை என்றால் தம் செயல் குறித்து வெட்கப்படுவர்.    இந்த வெட்கம் இருப்பதே சான்றோருக்கு அடையாளம்.  இந்த வெட்கத்தின் அவசியத்தை உணர்த்தும் இந்த நாணுடைமை எனும் அதிகாரம்.

“நாணத்தின் சிறப்பரிந்து அதனை போற்றுபவர் தம் செயல் தம் நிலைக்கொவ்வாமல் வெட்கி தலை குனியும்படி இருக்கும் என்றால், தம் உயிரே போகுமேன்றாலும் அந்த செயலை செய்ய மாட்டார்.  கேவலம் உயிருக்காக தம் நாணத்தினை விட்டுக்கொடுக்க மாட்டார்.” என்று நாணமுடையவர்களின் எண்ணத்தை கூறுகிறது குறள்.

உடல் நோவு எப்படி நம் உடம்பு சரியாக இல்லை என்று உணர்துகிறதோ அதே போல் இந்த நாணம் நம் செய்கை சரியில்லை என்று உணர்த்துகிறது. நம்  மரியாதைக்கு பங்கம் ஏற்படுவதைக் காட்டவே நாண உணர்ச்சி ஏற்படுகிறது.  அதை போருட்படுதாதவர் மனிதரே அல்ல.

When their actions do not match their sense of self, worthy people feel a sense of shame.  This shame in inappropriate behaviour is what distinguishes an honourable person. This chapter, naanudaimai, talks about the necessity of this sense of disgrace in protecting one’s honour.

“Principled people who understand the importance of honour will never take part in any activity that would shame them even if it means that not doing so would cost them their lives.  To them, their honour is worth more than their mere life” expounds the kural on the principles of upright people.

Our sense of shame is an indicator that our honour is being violated.  It serves the same function as pain does in a physical sense.  The man who ignores the warning signs from his sense of shame that his honour is being compromised is not a man at all.
