“To parents, the porridge dirtied by their children is better even than the nectar that the Gods cherish”

In Hindu culture, producing children is not merely a requirement for furthering one’s genes.  A child is necessary for one to cross the path charted out for a soul after death.  In that context, this chapter would have fulfilled the requirements of structure and content, had it merely stressed the importance of children.  However, this chapter, puthalvarai peruthal, goes beyond that and focuses on the sheer joy toddlers give parents.

Children are dear to their parents.  Biology and  sociology combine to elevate every action of the tot to a acme of achievement in the eyes of otherwise stable parents.  Every couple thinks it invented sex and every parent thinks that they have had the bestest, most perfect child.  This is why actions otherwise mundane or even distasteful are imbued with the glow of perfection.  The bard, by talking about the pleasure kids give to their parents, elevates this chapter to a plane of true Truths.

In this couplet, Valluvar talks about how mere porridge, that lowliest, blandest of dishes, which has further been contaminated by a child’s fresh-from-play fingers tastes so heavenly merely because the kid in question belongs to one.  Any other kid and the dish will meet the trash can and the child roundly condemned as a ‘dirty, spoilt brat”.  This is an experience all parents have had and by using such a common example, he brings home the joy of ones’ own kids very powerfully.

In my limited knowledge, it is only in Indian literature that childhood is so celebrated – every facet of childhood has been an inspiration for a song or a story.  For a society so in love with its toddlers, it is such a pity that we systematically make such conformists of them not much later.

1253: Loving you is a reflex –

“Propriety demands that I hide my lust. However it is beyond my voluntary control and, like a sneeze, bursts out without warning” says the woman, quite helplessly, in this kural.

Civilization is an ongoing struggle between desire and postponement of its fulfilment.  Yearning, especially in a woman, is typically expected to be expressed in private in most cultures.  By its very nature, lust breaks erases any veneer of control.  This chapter, niraiyazhithal, talks about losing control in a social sense.

Of all the bodily reflexes, a sneeze is the most involuntary.  When you gotta sneeze, you gotta sneeze!  Using that as a metaphor for lust breaking down a woman’s sense of decorum aptly conveys the extent of her yearning and her helplessness in fulfilling it.

The setting for the chapter is the nayaki expressing her helplessness in her desire to her friend.  I am astounded by the culture where such a topic is discussed so casually and explicitly.  This chapter and the others in the Thirukural clearly demonstrate the equality between the sexes, the mutual esteem, the fairness of the social norms, the permissiveness and the deep understanding of natural urges.  This is not unique to the Tamils.  I have seen this repeated in multiple English readings of other language literature.

The “Valentines Day” goons should actually understand what their culture is before going around beating up lovers in the name of “defending” it!

510: When Does Selection Stop? –

Selecting an unqualified person and not fully trusting a qualified person who has been properly selected – both of these behaviours in a leader will lead to everlasting trouble” says this kural, identifying when the selection process should end.

In this chapter, therinthuthelithal, Valluvar outlines in some detail how to go about selecting people for an assignment.

The other couplets in this chapter talk about what are the considerations in selecting a person, what are the pitfalls, what to look for, what to discount and such like dimensions in the selection of a person.  This kural, the last, talks about the necessity for fully empowering the selected candidate, once he or she has cleared the intensive selection process.  (As an aside, I personally believe that the reversal of this attitude – selecting indiscriminately and weeding out people on ‘performance’ – is the root cause for most of the ills plaguing the Indian IT industry.  I also believe we are yet to see the worst effects of such a strategy.)

When the leader does not trust the person who is selected after vigorous qualification tests, it sets up a negative spiral. Since the candidate is, in a sense, gelded by the lack of trust, his output naturally suffers.  This reduced output reinforces the leader’s original mistrust leading to a vicious cycle.  This is what Valluvar refers to as “everlasting trouble”.

A few years ago, there was a very interesting experiment conducted by Rosenthal-Jacobson in US schools. They claimed to have refined a 15 item questionnaire that can predict the best performers in a class.  They were allowed to administer this questionnaire and they identified the students “most likely to perform well”.  Very surprisingly, over 90% of the identified students were the best or near the best of the students in their class, irrespective of their earlier performance.

It turns out that the students most likely to perform well were selected randomly.  It was the teacher’s  expectations that the student will perform well that determined the student’s performance!  Similarly, it is not hard to think that a good student’s performance can be destroyed by the lack of trust of a student (For more information, please lookup Pygmalion Effect. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pygmalion_effect)

This kural too reiterates the same effect – if a leader thinks somebody will fail, they will certainly fail!

202: Why you should fear evil –

Theeyavai theeya payathalaal theeyavai

Evil deeds ultimately result in harming the doer and therefore need to be feared as more harmful than an uncontrolled fire” cautions this kural on the effects of doing evil.

A well developed sense of morality is essential to living life meaningfully in society.  It is not sufficient to know right from wrong.  This chapter, theevinaiyachcham, requires that one actively fear committing evil deeds.

Most catechisms answer the question “Why should I not commit evil, when the benefits are so obvious and immediate?” from an extraneous perspective. Typical answers are that “God will punish you”, “It is illegal.” Etc.   This kural, however, attempts to bring home the effect of the evil to the doer as a personal danger.  Self preservation is a basic drive in all living things.  By appealing to it, the kural brings immediacy and urgency to the argument.

How does evil harm the doer himself?  That question can be answered from two perspectives – one, it jeopardizes your chances of nirvana as your evil account goes into surplus.  This argument, of course, presupposes a belief in karma and a yearning for nirvana.

The other argument, requires a slightly long term outlook but does not require any special religious orientation.  When an evil deed is committed, the benefits are real but over time, it costs us our peace of mind.  The doer is worried about repercussions every waking minute and has to constantly strive to protect against them.  That loss of peace of mind makes it very costly to commit evil and hence it should be avoided.

I think kural’s attempt to make the consequences immediate & personal makes it powerful.

849: Identifying Idiots -

            Material Matters, Friendship, Stupidity

Kaanaathaan kaatuvaan thaankaanaan kaanaathaan
Kandaanaam thaankanda vaaru

“The mark of an idiot is his closed attitude – if an intelligent man tries to educate an idiot, the latter will disregard the advice and conversely, consider the former an idiot.  An idiot thinks only what he knows is knowledge and nothing else matters” asserts this alliterative kural.

Valluvar cautions against associating with stupid people, or even just intellectually inferior people, multiple times in the Thirukural.  It is therefore important to be able to identify stupid people.  This chapter, pullarivaanmai, talks about how to identify such idiots.

In my experience, the hallmark of an expert is his ability to say “I don’t know”.  Accepting one’s ignorance is the first step in acquiring knowledge.  It requires confidence in one’s own expertise and one’s ability to learn new things. (It also implies that what he does know, he knows well!).  An idiot, on the other hand, never accepts it, partially as a result of his fear of being exposed.

Knowledge which does not change, grow, improve, which is static is not knowledge at all. It is merely dogma, at best an opinion.  A closed attitude therefore is a clear predictor of an idiot on the horizon.  This attitude is further manifested by the inability to accept as ‘knowledge’ anything outside the idiot’s ken.

Continued association with a person who simply refuses to augment his knowledge will, in time, lead to frustration.   Perhaps this is the reason Valluvar consistently cautions against associating with them.  Like the popular quote goes “Do not deal with the stupid , they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience”!

Valluvar uses “seeing” as a metaphor for intelligence in this kural.  This helps in the alliteration and more importantly, underlines the deliberate blindness of the stupid.
