279: Find False Godmen – போலி சாமியாரை கண்டுபிடிப்பதெப்படி?

“நேராயிருந்தாலும் அம்பு கொலை செய்வதால் செயலால் கொடியது.  வளைந்து, நெளிந்து இருந்தாலும் யாழ் அது தரும் இசையின் காரணத்தால் செயலால் இனிமையானது.  அதே போல், துறவிகளையும், சாமியார்களையும் அவர்கள் தோற்றதால் எடை போடாமல் அவர்களது செய்கையால் எடை போட வேண்டும்.” என்று நேர்த்தியாய் அறிவுறுத்துகிறது குறள்.

திருக்குறளிலும் சரி, நான் அறிந்தவரையில் இந்து மத கோட்பாடுகளிலும் சரி, முக்தி அடைவதற்கு துறவறம் மட்டுமே வழி என்று சொல்லப்படவில்லை.  பார்க்கப் போனால் சிறந்த இல்வாழ்கையே உசிதம் எனக் கூறுவதாய் பல கதைகள் உள்ளன.  (“கொக்கென்று நினைத்தாயோ கொங்கணவா” என்று இல்லத்தரசி துறவியை இகழும் கூறும் கதை நாம் அறிந்ததே).  இப்படியிருக்கையில் துறவு கோலம் பூண்டால் ஒழுக்கம் மிக அவசியம்.  அப்படி ஒழுக்கம் பேண முடியாத துறவிகளைப் பற்றி எச்சரிக்கும் அதிகாரம் “கூடாவோழுக்கும்”.

போலிச் சாமியார்கள் மலிந்த இந்தக் காலத்திலே இந்தக் குறள் சொல்லும் அறிவுரை மிகவுக் முக்கியமானது.  ஒரு நித்யானந்தா இவ்வளவு செய்த பிறகும் அவனுக்கு பின்  இவ்வளவு ஆதரவாக இவ்வளவு பெரிய ஏமாளிக் கூட்டம் இருக்கிறதென்றால் மக்கள் சொற்களுக்கே மதிப்பு கொடுக்கிறார்கள் என்பது தெளிவாகிறது.  ஆங்கிலத்தில் பில் காலின்ஸ் (Phil Collins) பாடும் பாட்டில் ஒரு கிறிஸ்துவ சாமியார்  “நான் சொல்வதைச் செய். செய்வதைச் செய்யாதே” என்று கூறுவதாய் ஒரு வரி உண்டு.  அது எல்லா போலிச் சாமியார்களுக்கும் பொருந்தும்.  இந்தக் கபடதாரிகளைக் கண்டுபிடிக்க இவ்வளவு எளிதான வழி இரண்டாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பே தெரிந்திருந்தும் இவர்கள் தழைப்பது எப்படி என்பது தருமனையே குழப்பும் புதிர்!

“An arrow, though straight, is by action an evil thing because it  kills.  A harp, though crooked in appearance, is by action good because of beautiful the music it produces.  Similarly, ascetics and hermits should be judged, not by their appearance but by the consequences of their actions” is the practical advice of this kural.

Nowhere in the Thirukkural (and as far as I know, in Hinduism in general) is asceticism a requirement for salvation. Any normal householder, as long as he or she adheres to the dharma of a householder, can attain salvation.  Indeed, there are treatises that advocate the householder’s path as the best and easiest path to nirvana.  (It is another matter that the ‘normal’ householders (grihastas) are the economic engine which sustains a society where ¾ of the population by class is engaged in non-productive activities – brahmacharis, Vanaprasthas and Sanyasis!) In that situation, a person choosing a hermit’s path to salvation has to match his actions to his stated goal of renunciation.  This chapter, koodaaozhukkam, warns the readers against false ascetics whose demonstrated morals do not match their lofty goals.

The advice imparted by the kural is very relevant today, when every religion has its evangelists ready to part you from your money in return for guaranteed rapture.  One only has to look at the likes of the currently infamous Nithyananda, who was caught with his vesti down, literally.  Despite that he still commands a huge following who still hail him as a god head.  It is a wonder to me why these people are so gullible.  (This pattern of exposure of false god men with very little effect on the faith of their followers has been repeated in every culture in the world.   We are in no way unique in this!)

All we have to do to judge these god men is to judge them by the consequences of their actions – bad outcomes imply bad god men.  For too long have we followed preachers, ( like the one in the Phil Collins’ song who bawls “Don’t do as I dooo; just do as I saaaay”), unquestioningly in a manner which would make sheep proud.  Just use the simple litmus test advocated by this kural and you will never be fooled by another false god-man of any ilk.  (Somehow, I doubt that that will happen.)

Either this 2000 year old advice is easier to read than to follow or people are just plain stupid!
