“ஆரத் தழுவிகொண்டிருக்கும் போது ஊடே குளிர்க்காற்று புகுந்தது.  அந்தச் சிறு பிரிவையும் தாங்க முடியாமல் அவள் கண்கள் நிறம் மாறி பெரு மழையாய் கண்ணிர் வடிக்கின்றன” என்று அழகாய் வருணிக்கிறார் வள்ளுவர்.

பிரிவினால் வரும் மன உளச்சலை பற்றி பலரும் பாடியிருக்கின்றனர்.  ஆனால், வள்ளுவப்பெருமான் பிரிவால் உடல் அழகு குலைவதைப் பற்றி இந்த அதிகாரத்தில் பாடியிருக்கிறார்.

காதலின் தாக்கத்தை விளக்க சற்று மிகையாய் உவமை அளிப்பது  சகஜமாய் நடப்பதே.  இந்த குறளில் ஒரு செயலுக்கும் அதன் காரணதிற்க்கும் இருக்கும் கால இடைவெளி மூலமாக காதலின் நெருக்கத்தையும், பிரிவின் வலியையும் குறிப்பரிவிக்கிறார் புலவர். 

காற்றே புக முடியாத அளவிற்கு தழுவிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்களாம்; அவளுக்கு வலிக்குமே என்று காதலன் கொஞ்சம் நகர்ந்ததால் காற்று புகுந்துவிட்டதாம்.  அது குளிர் காற்றானதால் காதலி உணர்ந்துவிட்டாளாம்.  உடனே, அந்தக்ஷணமே பிரிவாற்றாமை தாக்கி, பசபுற்று கண்ணீர் வடிக்கிறாளாம்!

நடைமுறையில் நடக்காது என்றாலும், அதன் காரணத்தினாலேயே காதலின் ஆழமும், காதலியின் துயரமும் வெகு அழகாக நம் கண்முன் நிற்கின்றன.

“When we were entwined tightly in each other’s arms, a cool breeze sprung up and managed to come between us.  Unable to bear even such a small parting, my love’s eyes have lost luster and have filled up with tears  like from a rain” describes the lover in this kural.

World literature is rife with poems describing quite beautifully the mental trauma caused by separation.  Valluvar takes a different tack and describes the physical effects of parting, in this chapter, uruppunalamazhithal.

Any literature talking about love exaggerates.  In fact, the exaggeration counter-points the storm unleashed inside the lovers.  Valluvar uses the instantaneity of the physical reaction to underscore the love.

Just imagine:

The lovers are so entwined that there is no space for even air between them. Fearing that he is causing pain, the lover relaxes just a little bit, enabling the cool night air to get in between them.  That parting, instantaneously causes a physical reaction in his love – her eyes lose lustre and fill up with tears.

Sure it does not happen in reality.  It probably cannot happen.  But the very impossibility of the occurrence throws into relief the intensity of the passion and the pain that the lovers feel at parting.
