“நீர்பூக்களின் தண்டுகள் அவை மிதக்கும் குளத்தின் ஆழத்தின் அளவே நீண்டிருக்கும்.  குளத்தின் ஆழத்தை விட அதிகமிருந்தால் நீரின் மேல் மிதக்கமுடியாது. அதைவிட குறைவாக இருந்தால், மூழ்கிவிடும்.  அதேபோல் ஒருவர் வாழ்க்கையில் எவ்வளவு உயர்வார் என்று தீர்மானிப்பது அவருக்கு இருக்கும் ஊக்கமே” என்று எளிமையான உவமை அளிக்கிறது குறள்.

செய்யும் வேலையில் உற்சாகம் இருந்தால் மட்டுமே எதையும் சாதிக்க முடியும்.  அந்த உற்சாகமும், முயற்சியும் மன்னனுக்கும் அவனை சூழ்ந்திருப்பவர்கள்ளுக்கும் இருக்க வேண்டியதின் அவசியத்தை உணர்த்தும் அதிகாரம் இது.

எவ்வளவு செல்வம் இருந்தாலும், திறமை இருந்தாலும் ஊக்கமும் விடா முயற்சியும் இல்லாவிட்டால் தொடர்ந்து வெற்றி பெற முடியாது.  உதாரணமாக டெண்டுல்கரைவிட காம்ப்ளியே அதிக திறமை வாய்ந்தவர் என்று நிபுணர்கள் கூறுவார்கள்.  ஆனால் கிரிக்கெட்டிலும் வாழ்க்கையிலும் வெற்றி பெற்றது டெண்டுல்கர்தான்.  இருவரையும் வித்யாசபடுதுவது முன்னவரது ஊக்கமும் மனபாங்குமே.

இந்தக் குறளில் பிரயோகப்படுத்தியிருக்கும் உவமையும் மிகவும் இரசிக்கதக்கது.

“The stem of a water plants (like a lily) is just as long as the  height of pond that the plant is floating in.  If it is shorter, the flower would sink and if it is longer, it would droop.  Likewise, a man’s achievements in his life are directly proportional to the enthusiasm he has for his tasks” states the kural, metaphorically.

Nothing great can be achieved without enthusiasm.  Hence it is important for a king and his entourage to have it in abundance, if they want to attain anything.  The importance of such passion is underlined in this chapter entitled “ookamudaimai”.

Whatever the wealth or skills a person has, they are to no avail if he does not have the attitude or the hunger to make something of them.  Long term success only results from sustained and enthusiastic action. A good contemporary example would be to compare the career graphs of Sachin Tendulkar & Vinod Kambli.  There are experts who rate Kambli as the more gifted. But it is Tendulkar who scaled unbelievable peaks both in cricket and in life.  The difference between them?  Attitude and “love for the game” as Sachin calls it.

From a literary standpoint the aptness of the metaphor will not escape the attention of any connoisseur who appreciates mot juste.
