“கள்ளின் இன்பம் பெரிது என்று கூறும் குடிகாரர்கள் முட்டாள்கள்.  கள்ளை குடித்தால்தான் இன்பம்.  காமதிலோ, கூடினால் மட்டும்தான் இன்பம் என்றில்லை.  மனதால் நினைத்தாலும் மகிழ்ச்சி, கண்ணால் கண்டாலும் களிப்பு.” என்று காமத்தின் மேன்மையை தலைவி தோழியிடம் கூறுவதாக அமைந்துள்ளது குறள்.

கணவனும் மனைவியும் ஆழ்ந்த காதலால் கூடலுக்கு ஏங்கும் தன்மையை விளக்கும் அதிகாரம் இது.  குறிப்பாக இந்தக் குறள், பிரிந்து போகும் தலைவனுடன் ஏன் கூட வில்லை என்று தோழி கேலி செய்யும் போது அதற்கு தலைவி கூறும் பதிலாக அமைந்துள்ளது.

பிரிவதையும் கூடுவதையும் விரசமின்றி, இரசனையுடன் காமத்துப்பாலில் வள்ளுவர் எழுதியுள்ளார்.  விரசமில்லாமல், கடைநிலை இரசனையை தாண்டி எழுதத் தெரியாதவர்களெல்லாம் ‘கவிப் பேரரசு’ என்று கூறிக் கொண்டு அலைவது சிரிப்பை வரவழிக்கிறது!

இந்தக் குறளில் கவனிக்க வேண்டியது புலவரின் சொற் பிரயோகமே – ‘களிப்பு’ என்று கூறுவதால் அது உணர்வு அழியாத இரசிப்பு என்று உணர்த்துகிறார். ‘மகிழ்ச்சி’ என்றால் ஒரு படி மேலே சென்று உள்ளத்திலிருந்து தனிச்சையாக வரும் உவகையை குறியீட்டுகிறார்.  இரண்டுமே தன்னிலை தவறாமல் அறிவார்த்தமாக இரசிக்கும் நிலை.  குடியில் உள்ள இன்பம் அறிவழிந்து, நிலை தவறுவதால் வரும் சிற்றின்பம்.    இது, அது இல்லை என்று இந்தச் சொற்க்களை தேர்ந்தேடுத்ததால் சொல்கிறார் வள்ளுவர்.

(புணர்ச்சி =கூடல், கலவி; விதும்பல் = ஏக்கம்)

பி.கு: 3-4 நாட்கள் குறள் பற்றி எழுதாததற்க்கு மன்னிக்க வேண்டுகிறேன்.  என்னால் வலை தளத்தை அணுக முடியவில்லை.

“Those that claim that alcohol is the ultimate pleasure are fools.  The pleasure in it is only experienced when drinking.  Sex is infinitely better.  You can enjoy the act and later relive it just by thinking about it.  In fact, merely seeing one’s beloved can make us experience the pleasure once again” says the kural, making a very strong case for why sex is better than alcohol.

The context of the kural is as an answer by the woman to her friend, who teases her for not making love to her husband who is departing.  The Thirukkural talks about the mutual yearning of a married couple to make love in this chapter, punarchchivithumbal.  Valluvar writes beautifully and tastefully about all the sensual aspects of a couple in his epic.

While it is beyond my meagre skills to convey in another language the depth of meaning that the bard loads into the verse by his mere choice of words, the enjoyment of this kural is greatly enhanced if one appreciates it. I will try to the best of my abilities …

Valluvar uses ‘kalippu’ (joy) and ‘magizhchi’ (happiness) to denote the pleasure felt in thinking about and seeing one’s beloved.   Both words indicate a pleasure that is experienced rationally and cognitively.  A drunk’s pleasure, on the other hand, depends on losing oneself and the absence of rational thought.  Therefore, by choosing the words that he does for talking about the pleasure in the longing for love and not for the drunken stupor, he clearly places it above the latter and underlines the baseness of alcohol induced joy.
