பிரிவாற்றாமை பற்றி எழுதாத காவியமும் இல்லை, கலாச்சாரமும் இல்லை.  இந்த அதிகாரம் முற்றிலும் கணவன்-மனைவிகுள் உள்ள பிரிவு பற்றி மிகவும் இரசனையுடன் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

“உன்னை விட்டு பிரியவே மாட்டேன்” என்று எனக்கு கூறுவதாயின் என்னிடம் சொல்லு.  அதை விட்டு விட்டு “போய்விட்டு விரைவில் வருகிறேன்” என்று சொல்லப் போவதானால், நீ வரும் போது யார் உயிருடன் இருக்கிறார்களோ அவர்களிடம் சொல்லு.  இதுதான் இந்த குறளின் பொருள்.

க்ஷண நேரமும் உன்னை பிரிவது எனக்கு நரகவேதனை தரும் என்பதை இப்படி மிகையாக கூறுகிறார் வள்ளுவர்.

பி.கு: பரிமேலழகர் உரை இதை தலைமைகளுக்கு தோழி கூறுவதாகக் கூறுகிறது.  அது எப்படி பொருந்தும் என்று எனக்கு புரியவில்லை.

Reams have been written in world literature about parting in every language and every culture.  The Thirukkural too talks about it; in this chapter, it talk about the pain of parting between a married couple from various dimensions.

The kural says “If you are will never leave my side, then tell me. If you, on the other hand, are going to tell me that you will return in a very short time, then tell that to whoever is alive when you come back”.  There is no indication as to who is saying this to whom but to me it looks like this is being said by the man to the woman.

KFTD - 1187: Parting is such sweet sorrow

புல்லிக் கிடந்தேன் புடைபெயர்ந்தேன் அவ்வளவில்

அள்ளிக்கொள் வற்றே பசப்பு.

தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில், ஏன் உலக இலகியத்தில், காதலர்களுள் பிரிவு என்பது மிகவும் ரசனையோடு, அனுபவித்து எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது. சங்க இலக்கியத்தில் அன்றில் பறவைகள் இரை தேடும் போது சற்றே பிரிந்தாலும் தங்கள் உயிரை விட்டுவிடும் என்று   எழுதி இருப்பது மிகையானாலும்  மிகவும் இரசிக்கதக்கது.

இந்த அதிகாரம் முழுவதும் பிரிவும் அதனால் வரும் பசப்பை பற்றியும் வள்ளுவர் மிக அழகாக எழுகிறார். ‘பசப்பு’ என்பது பிரிவால் வரும் நிற வேறுபாடு.  இதை பசலையின் முதல் கட்டமாக கொள்ளலாம். 

இந்தக் குறள் கூறுவதாவது : “என் காதலரை தழுவிக் கிடந்து சற்றே பக்கம் விலகினேன்.  அய்யோ, என்ன இது, அந்த க்ஷண நேரத்தில் பசப்பு வந்து அள்ளிக் கொண்டுவிடதே!”.

பிரிவாற்றமையையும், காதலையும் இதை விட சிறப்பாக இவ்வளவு குறைந்த வார்த்தைகளில் வெளிபடுதுவது கடினம். 

In literature, the angst of lovers separated, be it temporarily or for a bit longer, has a well-deserved special place.   As usual, Shakespeare says it best

“Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow,
That I shall say good night till it be morrow.”

In Tamil literature,   ‘Pasappu’ is used as an external indicator of the sorrow separation is causing.  Pasappu is a change in complexion brought on by separation. In a sense, this is the first step in the onset of the pasalai disease. It is specific to parting and is not due to any physical causes. As far as I know, there is no equivalent in English. 

This entire chapter in the kural talks about the sorrow of separation. 

“I was entwined in my lover’s embrace.  All it took to bring on a full attack of pasalai and make me change colour is for me to let go to lie on his side.”

I love the sense of urgency and utter unwillingness to let go for even a second conveyed in the couplet.  Parting need not even be overnight, just losing touch, literally, is enough!
