“நிலம் என்பது மனைவியை போன்றது.  மனைவியை சரியாக மதித்து அவளுக்கு செய்ய வேண்டியவைகளை செய்யவில்லை என்றால் அவள் கணவனை வெறுக்க துவங்குவாள். அதன் பின்னரும் அவன் சரியாகவில்லையென்றால், சண்டைபோட்டுக்கொண்டு விலகி விடுவாள்.  அதே போல், நிலத்திற்கு சொந்தக்காரன் அதை சரிவர கவனித்து பராமரிக்கவில்லை என்றால் நிலமும் அவனிடம் ஒத்துழைக்காது.  அலட்சியம் தொடர்ந்தால், நிலம் பாழாகி பயனற்றுவிடும்” என்று எச்சரிக்கிறது குறள்.

அன்றும் சரி, இன்றும் சரி, ஒரு நாட்டின் முதுகெலும்பே அதன் உழவர்கள்தான்.  அவர்கள் உழைத்து தானியங்களை உருவாக்காவிட்டால் என்ன கதி என்று விளக்கும் அதிகாரம் இது.

மனைவியும் மனையும் ஒன்றே; இரண்டும் பேணி பாதுகாத்தால் பலன் தரும்.  அலட்சிய படுத்தினால் ஒத்துழைக்காமல் ஆக்கத்தை நிறுத்திவிடும்.  இதை ஊடலுடன் ஒப்பிட்டு இரண்டுக்குமான உறவுகளின் பரிணாமங்களை உணர்த்துகிறார் புலவர்.

“A farm land is just like a wife.  Take good care of it, and it will reward you with a fertile bounty.  Neglect it and just like a wife, it will warn you initially by not co-operating. Persist in the neglect and just like a woman, the land too will abandon you and become unproductive.” cautions the kural.

Any nation or land depends on its farmers.  If they do not produce the food, all other economic activity will come to a grinding end. In that sense they are the  primary engines of an economy be it agrarian or industrial.  This chapter, uzhavu, emphasises the importance of farming.

The aptness of the passive-aggressive warning underscores the similarities between a wife and a field.  Both require care and nurturing to remain fertile and productive.  Valluvar brings out the layers of meaning loaded into such a relationship by using the word “oodal” which signifies a tiff, normally between husband and wife.  The causality and the progression of the tiff is implied very economically in the seven words that he uses.

தனி மனிதனாக மட்டுமின்றி ஒரு குடிமகனாக எப்படி வாழ வேண்டும் என்றும் வள்ளுவர் கூறுகிறார்.  மானம் என்பது இல்லையேல் ஒன்றும் இல்லை என்பது யாவரும் அறிந்ததே. 

இந்தக் குறளில் அவர் ஒரு படி மேலே போய் கண்ணியமாக வாழ்வது பற்றிக் கூறுகிறார்.  உயர்ச்சி வரும் போதும் உயர்வாய் இருக்கும் போதும், ஒருவன் பணிவாய் இருத்தல் வேண்டும்.  அனால், வறுமையோ சற்றே சறுக்கமமோ வரும் காலத்தில், இழிவாக நடக்காமல், விட்டுக் கொடுக்காமல் உயர்வாக நடந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்.  வறுமை, அல்பதனதிற்கு அனுமதி அளிப்பதில்லை.  நடத்தையில் பயமோ, திகைப்போ, தயக்கமோ இல்லாமல், முன்பை போலவே கௌரவமாக இருத்தல் வேண்டும்.

ஒருவனுடைய நடத்தை அவனிடம் எவ்வளவு செல்வம் இருக்கிறது என்பதை பொறுத்து இல்லாமல், அவனுடைய கொள்கைகளுக்கு ஏற்றவாறு இருக்க வேண்டும்.

The Thirukkural does not just advise kings and ministers on their behavior and responsibilities.  It clearly specifies what is expected of a citizen functioning as a part of the society too.  (Of course, there are entire chapters dedicated to how an individual should behave.)

This section talks about how to live with honour (Maanam) and this kural talks specifically about one’s conduct in times of prosperity and otherwise. 

It says, “During times of prosperity, a man should comport himself humbly and without any airs. When poverty strikes, a man should behave without compromising his dignity.”

Essentially, one’s deportment should not be affected by one’s financial status but should be governed by one’s principles.
