தனி மனிதனாக மட்டுமின்றி ஒரு குடிமகனாக எப்படி வாழ வேண்டும் என்றும் வள்ளுவர் கூறுகிறார்.  மானம் என்பது இல்லையேல் ஒன்றும் இல்லை என்பது யாவரும் அறிந்ததே. 

இந்தக் குறளில் அவர் ஒரு படி மேலே போய் கண்ணியமாக வாழ்வது பற்றிக் கூறுகிறார்.  உயர்ச்சி வரும் போதும் உயர்வாய் இருக்கும் போதும், ஒருவன் பணிவாய் இருத்தல் வேண்டும்.  அனால், வறுமையோ சற்றே சறுக்கமமோ வரும் காலத்தில், இழிவாக நடக்காமல், விட்டுக் கொடுக்காமல் உயர்வாக நடந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்.  வறுமை, அல்பதனதிற்கு அனுமதி அளிப்பதில்லை.  நடத்தையில் பயமோ, திகைப்போ, தயக்கமோ இல்லாமல், முன்பை போலவே கௌரவமாக இருத்தல் வேண்டும்.

ஒருவனுடைய நடத்தை அவனிடம் எவ்வளவு செல்வம் இருக்கிறது என்பதை பொறுத்து இல்லாமல், அவனுடைய கொள்கைகளுக்கு ஏற்றவாறு இருக்க வேண்டும்.

The Thirukkural does not just advise kings and ministers on their behavior and responsibilities.  It clearly specifies what is expected of a citizen functioning as a part of the society too.  (Of course, there are entire chapters dedicated to how an individual should behave.)

This section talks about how to live with honour (Maanam) and this kural talks specifically about one’s conduct in times of prosperity and otherwise. 

It says, “During times of prosperity, a man should comport himself humbly and without any airs. When poverty strikes, a man should behave without compromising his dignity.”

Essentially, one’s deportment should not be affected by one’s financial status but should be governed by one’s principles.

எந்த ஒரு வேலையையும் சிறப்பாக முடிக்க அது தகையும் வரை காத்திருக்கும் பொறுமை வேண்டும்.  அது தகையும் நேரத்தை கணிப்பதே காலமறிதல். 

இந்தக் கருத்தை வள்ளுவர் ஒரு மிகச் சிறந்த உவமை மூலமாக நமக்கு உணர்த்துகிறார். ஒரு கொக்கை மீனை பிடிக்க அமைதியாக, சலனமின்றி, பொறுமையாக உயிரில்லாதது போல் காத்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும்.  ஏமாந்த மீன் அருகில் வந்தாலோ, அது தப்புமுன் குத்தி தன் காரியத்தை சாதித்துக்கொள்ளும்.  அது போலவே, தகையும் நேரம் வரும் வரை பொறுமையை காத்திருந்து விட்டு, கைகூடும் நேரம் வந்ததும் உடனே, துரிதமாக செயலாற்றி வெற்றி கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

விளையாட்டில் மட்டுமல்ல, வாழ்க்கையிலும் டைமிங் (timing) மிக முக்கியம்.

To accomplish anything, it is important not only to have the requisite skills and competence but also the ability to assess the right time for the undertaking to be a success.  This sense of timing is kaalamarithal, the name of this chapter.

Valluvar brings out the importance of timing by means of a metaphor: An egret, when out fishing, waits patiently, soundlessly, motionlessly for the fish to come near.  This phase of low profile, prepared waiting is the key to its success when a fish does come nigh, not realizing the danger.  When that moment comes, the egret spears the fish in a flash, with no hesitation and with alacrity. 

These dual qualities, waiting for the opportune moment patiently and acting decisively, without hesitation when the waited for opportunity presents itself, will ensure success every time.

Timing is essential not just in sports but in life too.

KFTD – 619: Perseverance Pays

 ஆள்வினையுடைமை என்னும் அதிகாரம் விடாது முயற்சி செய்வதை பற்றி கூறுகிறது.  ஓரு வேலையை தெய்வமே தன்னால் முடியாது என்று கைவிட்ட பிறகும் ஒருவன் முனைப்புடன் உடல் வருந்த வேலை செய்தால், நிச்சயம் வெற்றி கிட்டும்.  இந்த பொருளுரை இந்த குறள் பற்றி என்னுடைய அபிப்பிராயம்.

பரிமேலழகர் இதை இரண்டு விதமாக ஆராய்கிறார் – தெய்வத்தை மட்டும் நம்பி ஒரு வேலையை ஆரம்பிக்காமல் தன் முயற்சி பயன் தரும்மென்று நம்பி செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு விளக்கம்.  மற்றொன்று,  தெய்வம் கைவிட்டாலும், நாம் இட்ட முயற்சி அதன் வருத்தத்தின் அளவேனும் கூலி தரும், வீணாய் போகாது.

இவற்றில், விடா முயற்சி செய்ய அதிகம் ஊக்குவிப்பது என்னுடைய விளக்கமே என்பது எனது தாழ்மையான எண்ணம்.

The importance of Perseverance (aalvinamyudaimai) in ensuring success in any endeavor cannot be understated.  This is the focus of this chapter.

The kural says, in my opinion, that if even God has given up an undertaking as “Impossible”, undying, sinew straining effort and perseverance will definitely make success possible. 

The more classical interpretations give either of the following opinions – One,do not start a new effort believing that God will make it a success.  Instead, it is better to believe that our own efforts will bring victory nigh. 

The other explanation says that even if an attempt fails because God has given up, you will most certainly get at least the rewards of the effort that you put into it.

Of the three versions, I personally believe that first encourages perseverance the best.
