KFTD 222: Give or take …

Generosity or giving to people who are in dire need is stressed asan important quality for running a household. This generosity has a selfish motive in that it builds up spiritual meritfor your future lives.

Valluvar brings out the importance of giving thusly: “If suddenlyit becomes acceptable to receive alms and your generous donations no longercount towards your spiritual upliftment, even then it is better to give than totake.”

I like the structure ofthe kural more than the meaning. Valluvar removes the shame in begging and thesocial acceptability of giving and concludes that giving is better thanbegging.

It does lead one towonder if everybody gives, who takes?

KFTD – 490: Patience and timing

To accomplish anything, it is important not only to have the requisite skills and competence but also the ability to assess the right time for the undertaking to be a success.  This sense of timing is kaalamarithal, the name of this chapter.

Valluvar brings out the importance of timing by means of a metaphor: An egret, when out fishing, waits patiently, soundlessly, motionlessly for the fish to come near.  This phase of low profile, prepared waiting is the key to its success when a fish does come nigh, not realizing the danger.  When that moment comes, the egret spears the fish in a flash, with no hesitation and with alacrity.
These dual qualities, waiting for the opportune moment patiently and acting decisively, without hesitation when the waited for opportunity presents itself, will ensure success every time.

Timing is essential not just in sports but in life too.

KFTD - 672: How to execute

Thirukkural is clear that there are various modes of action in executing a given task or assignment.  This chapter, vinaiseyalvagai, details the various modes available to an executive and also tells when a specific mode is to be utilized.

Valluvar, in this kural, understands that not all tasks require immediate action.  Indeed there are activities which need to be done slowly and deliberately to ensure success.  In fact, the words he uses are ‘Sleepy action’.   For example, deciding on your company’s five year strategy or closer home, design.  On the other hand, some activities require immediate and crisp action.  Again, a bug in a live system comes to mind.  Using a deliberate mode in the latter case is a recipe for disaster.

And of course we have all tried to rescue a runaway project with ‘ACTION’ when what was needed what an attempt at identifying what went wrong and fixing it.
