ஆட்சி செய்பவர் தாம் செய்ய வேண்டிய
வேலைகளை முகம் சுளிக்காமல், சோர்வில்லாமல், திட்டத்தின் எந்த அடியையும் மறக்காமல்
செய்தல் அவசியம். அந்த குணத்திற்கு பொச்சாவாமை
என்று பெயர். அதுவே இந்த அதிகாரத்தின்
சாரம்.

ஆட்சி செய்பவர் தாம் செய்ய வேண்டிய
வேலைகளை முகம் சுளிக்காமல், சோர்வில்லாமல், திட்டத்தின் எந்த அடியையும் மறக்காமல்
செய்தல் அவசியம். அந்த குணத்திற்கு பொச்சாவாமை
என்று பெயர். அதுவே இந்த அதிகாரத்தின்
சாரம்.
“மனதில் பயம் இருந்தால், எவ்வளவு சிறந்த
கோட்டைகுள் பதுங்கி இருந்தாலும் அதில் பயனில்லை. அவர்களுக்கு எதிரி அவர்களது பயமே.
அதே போல், எவ்வளவு செல்வமும், சிறப்பும் இருந்தாலும், மறதி இருப்பவர்களுக்கு
அதனால் பயனில்லை. மறதியால் அவர்கள் திட்டங்கள் கெட்டு, அவர்தம் உயர்ச்சி எல்லாம் பனியென
பறந்துவிடும்.” என்று எச்சரிக்கிறது குறள்.
மறதியால் வரும் கேடு பற்றி நாம் “கஜினி”
திரைப்படத்தில் கண்டோம். ஒரு அதிகாரிக்கு
மறதியிருந்தால் எதிர்பார்ப்புக்கும் உண்மைக்கும் உள்ள வேற்றுமை தெரியாமல்
போகும். அப்படி இருந்தால், அவர் தன்
வேலையில் சிறக்க முடியாது. எனேவே மறதி கொடியது என்பதில் சந்தேகம் இல்லை.
ஆனால், பொச்சாவாமைக்கு “ஊக்கமில்லாமை”
என்ற பொருளும் உண்டு. ஊக்கம்மில்லை என்றாலும்
ஒருவனது செல்வம் பறந்துவிடும். நான்
படித்த ஆசிரியர்கள் எல்லோரும் இதை மறதி என்றே விளக்குகிறார்கள். தனிப்பட்ட
முறையில் எனக்கு ‘ஊக்கமில்லை’ என்ற அர்த்தம் இன்னும் பொருத்தமாக உள்ளதாகத்
தோன்றுகிறது.

“pochchaavaimai”
means a lack of perseverance or forgetfulness.
Both perseverance and memory are very important for a king to discharge
his duties. This chapter underlines the
importance of these qualities.
“When there
is fear in your heart, even the best and most secure fortress is of no use to
you as your timidity will steal your peace of mind. Similarly, forgetfulness is to be
despised. However wealthy or important a
man is, if he is forgetful, he is sure to lose it all” admonishes the kural.
Absentmindedness
is endearing in movies but in life people have lost lives, careers and great
wealth due it. A preoccupied manager will not be able to
review his subordinates performance as he would be unable to identify the gap
between expectation and actuality.
Therfore the impact of a bad memory is unimpeachable.
However, pochchaavaimai,
also means perseverance. In today’s age
where there are a million aides to memory in one’s pocket the latter meaning
has the greater relevance in my opinion.
Without perseverance too, one’s wealth flies away. Hence I prefer the latter interpretation to the interpretation that
equates it to forgetfulness.
