ஒரு காரியத்தை வெற்றியுடன் முடிக்க பகைவரின் வலிவையும் தக்க காலத்தையும் அறிந்தால் போதாது.  எந்த களத்தில் எவ்வாறு வெற்றி கிட்டும் என்பதையும் நோக்க வேண்டும் என்று கூறும் அதிகாரம் இது.

“பகைவனை சூழ்ந்து அவனது நுழைவாயில்களை அடைத்து எந்த இடத்தில முற்றுகையிட்டால் வெற்றி கிட்டும் என்று முதலில் அடையாளம் காண வேண்டும். அதன் பின்னரே பகைவனை வெல்லும் பணியை தொடங்க வேண்டும்.  வெற்றியடையும் வரை எதிரியை இகழாதிருக்க வேண்டும்” என்ற பொருள் பட உள்ளது இந்தக் குறள்.

சற்றே விரிவாக நோக்கினால், எதிரியின் பலம் மழுங்கவும் நம் வலிவு ஓங்கவும் ஏதுவாய் இருக்கும் களத்தில் போர் நடக்குமாறு பார்த்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டியது மிக அவசியம்.  ச்பார்டர்கள் (Spartans) பெர்சியர்களை தெர்மொபிலேவில்  (Thermopylae) அன்றி வேறு எந்த இடத்திலும் வென்றிருக்க முடியாது.  இந்நாளில் சந்தையியலில் (marketing) ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட இடத்திற்கு உள்ள முக்கியத்துவம் பற்றி நாம் அனைவரும் அறிவோம்.

ஏழே வார்த்தைகளில் இத்தனை அர்த்தம் தொக்கி நிற்க வைக்க வள்ளுவனால் மட்டுமே முடியும்!

To succeed, it is not enough to understand an adversary’s strength or the right time to strike. It is equally important to choose the correct theatre of conflict to ensure success.  This chapter, idanarithal, talks specifically about selecting the right place to guarantee victory.

“Before beginning any a campaign, it is important to scout and select the specific location from where it would be easy to surround an enemy’s fortress and block all his access points. Once such a location is selected until victory is achieved, it is futile to bad mouth the enemy.  (After victory it is mean to badmouth him!)”

In a broader context, it means that it is important to select the battleground in such a way that the opponent’s strengths are blunted and one’s own strengths are utilized to their full potential.  The famous battle at Thermopylae could not have succeeded at any other location.

In a contemporary context, we are all aware of how important location is for marketing.

Loading so many shades of meaning in seven words is an art that Valluvar is a master at.

ஒரு அரசனுக்கும் (அதிகாரிக்கும்) இருக்கும் குற்றங்களும்,  கெட்ட பழக்கங்களும் வெறுமே தனி நபர் பொறுத்தவை அல்ல.  அவைகளால் அவரின் நிர்வாகமும் அதன் பாதுகாப்பும் பாதிக்க படும். எனவே அவர் தன் குறைகளை குறைத்துக்கொள்ள வேண்டியது அவசியமாகிறது.  இதை பற்றியே இந்த அதிகாரம் கூறுகிறது.

குறள் கூறுவதாவது:

அரசனுக்கு குறைகள் இல்லாதது நல்லது.  அப்படி இருப்பின், அவர் தனக்கு இன்பம் தருவது எது என்பதையும், அதை நுகருவதையும் பிறர் அறியாவண்ணம் இரகசியமாக வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும்.  அப்படி செய்தால், அவருடைய எதிரிகள் சூழ்ச்சி செய்ய தேவையான பிடிமானங்கள் குறைக்க படும்.

வள்ளுவரின் மொழி ஆளுமை மிக அழகாக இந்த செய்யுளில் வெளிவருகிறது.  மேலும் குறைகளின் தவிர்க்க முடியாத தன்மையும், பகைவர்களுக்கு அவை கொடுக்கும் சந்தர்பத்தையும், அவற்றின் தாக்கத்தை குறைக்கும் வழியை கூறுவது அவரின் நுண்ணறிவை காட்டுகிறது.

For people in authority, their foibles are not just a matter of personal preference.  They have the ability to impact their authority and their organization’s security.  All espionage is based on this.  Therefore it is imperative for senior functionaries to minimize their shortcomings.  This chapter, kutrangkadithal, is about why it is necessary to actively eradicate one’s imperfections.

In this, the last kural in the chapter, Valluvar recognizes the inevitability of having vices.  Therefore he counsels “A king needs to prevent others from knowing on what gives him pleasure.  Further he should have the ability to indulge in his pet vices in secrecy.  If he is able to do this, he will reduce the security holes available to his enemies to exploit his weaknesses and thereby defeat their plots.”

The practical approach to both the recognition inescapability of vices and the solution to enjoy them with consequences minimized demonstrate his grasp of worldly knowledge.  In Tamil, the structure of the couplet also reveals his mastery over the language.

நம் சுற்றம் நமது செயல்கள் மீது பெரும் தாக்கம் உடையது.  அதிலும் ஒரு அரசனைப்போல் அதிகாரத்தில் உள்ளவர்களுக்கு அவர்களது சுற்றத்தின் மூலமே தகவல் சேகரிப்பும் செயல் பாடும் நடைபெறுகின்றன.  எனவே, தக்க நபர்களோடு சேர்தலும், தகாதவர்களோடு சேராதிருதலும் மிகவும் அவசியமாகிறது. இந்த அதிகாரத்தில், வள்ளுவர் பின்னது பற்றி கூறுகிறார்.

குறள் கூறுவது, “ஒருவனுடைய பிரத்யேகமான அறிவு முதல் நோக்கில் அவனது மனதிலிருந்து வெளிபடுவது போல தோன்றினாலும், உண்மையாக ஆராய்ந்தால் அவனது இனத்திலிருந்தே தோன்றுகிறது என்று தெளிவாகும்”, என்பதே.

இந்த குறளை சற்று ஆழ்ந்து நோக்க வேண்டும் என்று படுகிறது.  இதை மேலெழுந்தவாரியாக பார்த்தால் அறிவு சுற்றத்தாரால் உண்டாவது என்பதுபோல் இருக்கிறது.  வள்ளுவர் இதை ‘சிற்றினஞ்சேராமை’ எனும் அதிகாரத்தில் கூறுவதால், இதன் அர்த்தம் சற்றே மாறுபடுகிறது என்று தோன்றுகிறது.  ‘சிற்றினம்’ என்றால், “நல்லது’ “தீயது” என்று பாகுபடுத்தாதவர்கள், காமுகர்கள், பாசாங்கு செய்பவர்கள், கபடதாரிகள் போன்றோர் ஆவர் என்கிறார் பரிமேலழகர்.  இதையும் சேர்த்து பார்த்தால், “நல்ல அறிவும் ஞானமும் இருந்தாலும், அது வெளிப்படும் போது நம் சுற்றத்தாரின் தாக்கம் கொண்டு அதற்கு ஏற்றவாறு மாறும்” என பொருள் கொள்ளலாம். நம் அறிவு நமது வாழ்க்கையில் ஏற்படும் அனுபவங்களாலும், நம்மை பாதிக்கும் கொள்கைகளாலும், நமக்கு முன்னுதாரணமாக இருப்பவர்களாலும் உருவாக்க படுகிறது என்பது மறுக்கமுடியாதது.  எனவே, நமது சுற்றம் பழுதாய் இருந்தால், நமது அறிவும் திரிந்துவிடும் என்றே பொருள் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

For anybody in a position of authority, like a king, the quality people who are in daily contact with her, like the support staff and subordinates, is of utmost importance.  Information gathering and delegation of authority and decisions necessarily go through these layers of people.  Hence it is important for the person in authority to ensure that the people surrounding her are qualified and have the correct value systems.  It is probably more important to ensure that the wrong person is not in the entourage.  This chapter in the Thirukkural, sitrinamseraamai, talks about not a king associating with the wrong crowd.

“While it appears that a person’s specific knowledge and insight is innate, a deeper, truer analysis reveals that it is a product of his environment & the company he keeps” – this is the meaning of the kural.

While Valluvar seems to be deciding on the side of nurture in the age-old debate, I think it is important to consider the context of the kural – it is in a chapter that cautions against the wrong company.  “Wrong Company” here is defined as people who are immature, superficial, people who fail to distinguish between right & wrong (worse, who don’t care about it), lustful individuals etc.  So, clearly it is a set of people whose value systems are wrong. 

Taking this into consideration, I think the kural means that while intelligence may be innate, it is moulded and given expression by our environment and hence is a product of the environment.  It is undeniable that our value systems and therefore our decisions are shaped by our life experiences, the philosophies that impact us and the people who we consider our role models.  Thus if these are of bad quality, our intelligence will also go bad.

KFTD – 619: Perseverance Pays

தெய்வத்தான் ஆகா தெனினும் முயற்சிதன்

 ஆள்வினையுடைமை என்னும் அதிகாரம் விடாது முயற்சி செய்வதை பற்றி கூறுகிறது.  ஓரு வேலையை தெய்வமே தன்னால் முடியாது என்று கைவிட்ட பிறகும் ஒருவன் முனைப்புடன் உடல் வருந்த வேலை செய்தால், நிச்சயம் வெற்றி கிட்டும்.  இந்த பொருளுரை இந்த குறள் பற்றி என்னுடைய அபிப்பிராயம்.

பரிமேலழகர் இதை இரண்டு விதமாக ஆராய்கிறார் – தெய்வத்தை மட்டும் நம்பி ஒரு வேலையை ஆரம்பிக்காமல் தன் முயற்சி பயன் தரும்மென்று நம்பி செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு விளக்கம்.  மற்றொன்று,  தெய்வம் கைவிட்டாலும், நாம் இட்ட முயற்சி அதன் வருத்தத்தின் அளவேனும் கூலி தரும், வீணாய் போகாது.

இவற்றில், விடா முயற்சி செய்ய அதிகம் ஊக்குவிப்பது என்னுடைய விளக்கமே என்பது எனது தாழ்மையான எண்ணம்.

The importance of Perseverance (aalvinamyudaimai) in ensuring success in any endeavor cannot be understated.  This is the focus of this chapter.

The kural says, in my opinion, that if even God has given up an undertaking as “Impossible”, undying, sinew straining effort and perseverance will definitely make success possible. 

The more classical interpretations give either of the following opinions – One,do not start a new effort believing that God will make it a success.  Instead, it is better to believe that our own efforts will bring victory nigh. 

The other explanation says that even if an attempt fails because God has given up, you will most certainly get at least the rewards of the effort that you put into it.

Of the three versions, I personally believe that first encourages perseverance the best.
